Mr. Ray Persons, a University of Texas system college recruiter, recently visitied with Dan F. Long students regarding the college opportunities available to them.

Quincy Watson, 6th grade student at Vivian Field Middle School, won the local VFW outpost Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest.
Each year more than 100,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. The first-place winner from each state competes to win one of 46 national awards totaling $46,000. The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in March.
The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.
The Vivian Field Yearbook from 2013-2014 has been chosen as an Honorable Mention in the 2015 Balfour Yearbook.
This is an honor that less than 6% of all yearbooks nation and worldwide receive. It is decided upon by judges from outside the Balfour company who are brought in to vote and deliberate awards
On Dec. 4, all six middle schools competed in the UIL One Act Play competition. Dramatic presentations included such titles as “The Beggar’s Opera,” “Antigone Now” and “Fourteen Lines.” In addition to acting, the technical crews and stage managers worked behind the scenes to present great theater within the UIL time limits.
Individual results are as follows:
Best Actor: James Teague, Polk Middle School
Best Actress: Elizabeth Stepaniak, Field Middle School.
First Place Play: ”This is a Test,” Field Middle School
Second Place Play: ”The Book of Everything,” Polk Middle School
Third Place Play: “Alice in Wonderland,” Perry Middle School
The next round of UIL Academic Competition will begin Jan. 12 at Newman Smith High School.
The spring book fair has come and gone, and it was a record breaking year. Mrs. Wiggins was able to earn more than $2,000.00 with Scholastic to spend on new books for the library. Thanks to everyone who supported the school!

Thompson Elementary was thrilled to host its first annual Cougar 2K15 fun run. Students spent the weeks prior to the run collecting pledges. Any proceeds from the run will be used to purchase soccer goals and dance dance revolution for the P.E. program.
Students, teachers, parents, even Dr. Burns, came out to support the school. We had a great time and can’t wait until next year when we do it again!
Award-winning, bestselling illustrator AG Ford visited both Sheffield campuses to share with students how he became a professional illustrator. He showed students how he create pictures and how being bad at basketball, but good at drawing (with lots of practice) led him to his career.
The Rosemeade Elementary Student Council has raised over $1200 to support Kacie’s Run. Kacie’s Run is an officially timed race that is held each March at Standridge Stadium to support CFB Special Olympics. Rosemeade teacher, Leticia Robert, leads the Rosemeade Student Council. Rosemeade’s P.E. coach also contributed $200 toward the goal.
Rosemeade Elementary’s Student Council sponsored a bulletin board spotlighting our hometown heroes in recognition of Veterans Day. Heroes that were recognized ranged from grandfathers, grandmothers, dads, moms, aunts, uncles, sisters, bothers, as well as great-grandparents from the different branches of our armed services. Additionally, students showed their support by either wearing red, white, and blue or camouflage clothing.
