Scoliosis Screening

We are scheduling scoliosis screening district wide to all 5th and 8th grade students in compliance with state law. Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. Adolescents are especially vulnerable to this condition due to their rapid growth. If detected early, scoliosis can usually be corrected before serious damage occurs and extensive treatment is required.

The school nurses have received training in the techniques of scoliosis screening. The nurses are not physicians; therefore, this screening is not a diagnosis and may only be considered as advisory. Even if no problem is recognized by the screening, only an examination by a qualified physician can rule out the existence of a problem. This screening procedure does not replace your child’s need for regular health care and check-ups.

The procedure for screening is a simple one. The trained examiner observes the child’s back as he or she stands and bends forward. In order that the back may be observed, it is necessary that the blouse or shirt be removed. Girls may wear halter tops, bras or swimming suits under their clothing. Pupils will be individually screened to insure privacy. If further consultation is recommended, parents will be notified and will be encouraged to see their own physician for further evaluation.

According to law, all students in grades 5 and 8 are required to be screened. If you prefer to have your child screened by your physician, please send us a written note stating that preference.

If you have any questions, please call your school nurse.
