Preventative Ways to Handle the Infectious Diseases Including MRSA

  • Personal hygiene is the best defense against staph infection.
  • Encourage hand washing before eating and after toileting.
  • Observe children for open wounds, keep wounds clean and covered.
  • Wounds that do not heal properly need medical attention.
  • Encourage children not to share personal items such as clothes, towels, soap or razors.
  • If you have any questions about your condition, please ask your doctor.

Riding the Bus

  • Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street.
  • Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter.
  • When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are back away from the bus.
  • Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus.
  • Stay away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal that it’s okay to approach.

Walking and Riding a Bicycle

  • Mind all traffic signals and/or the crossing guard — never cross the street against a light, even if you don’t see any traffic coming.
  • Walk your bike through intersections.
  • Walk with a buddy.
  • Wear reflective material…it makes you more visible to street traffic.

Internet Safety

  • Don’t give out personal information about yourself, your family situation, your school, your telephone number, or your address.
  • When in chatrooms remember that not everyone may be who they say they are.
  • If someone harasses you online, says anything inappropriate, or does anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, contact your Internet service provider.

Stranger Awareness

  • Never talk to strangers
  • Never let a stranger get too close to you
  • Never take candy, a present or anything from a stranger
  • Never tell a stranger your name, address or phone number
  • Never get into a stranger’s car
  • Never go into deserted places alone
  • Always try to walk with friends or an adult
  • If a stranger grabs you, yell as loud as you can saying things like, “Help!!,” “Call the Police,” “This isn’t my parent”

Preventative Ways to Handle the Cold and Flu Season

Cold and Flu season is upon us.  Below are some ways to help keep your children healthy. Always remind children to:

  • Cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when they cough or sneeze – have them throw the tissue away after they use it.
  • Wash their hands often with soap and water, especially after they cough or sneeze. If water is not near, use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.  Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.
  • If you get sick, stay home.  If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you get sick.  You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Get regular exercise, enough rest and eat healthy balanced meals.
