Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Gifted and Talented (GT) Education in Carrollton-Farmers Branch (CFBISD)

I understand that CFBISD has two different GT programs. Can you explain the difference?

CFBISD has a strong history of serving gifted students through two different programs.

ACE (Academic Creative Education) is a program for gifted students who are served at their home elementary and middle school campuses in a cluster-grouped model. They learn with their other gifted peers and are provided with differentiated curriculum through the English Language Arts content area.

LEAP (Leading Exceptional Academic Producers) is a sequential program that seeks to integrate the intellectual and affective (emotional/social) aspects of the highly gifted child who demonstrates a need for a more accelerated curriculum. LEAP qualified students are served at a single elementary campus and a single middle school campus. They learn with their other highly gifted peers in the four core subject areas and experience all other learning experiences within the general education population.

All gifted students are further served through an array of Pre-AP and AP (Advanced Placement) courses in the middle and high school years.  Gifted high school students (LEAP and ACE) are served through Global and World Experience classes that combine an AP Social Sciences course with an English Language Arts course. Students taking AP courses will take an examination near the end of the course for the opportunity to earn possible college credit

I am new to CFBISD, and my child was identified as gifted in another state or in another district in Texas. Is he/she automatically placed into your gifted program?
Our current CFB-ISD Gifted and Talented Department guidelines do not allow us to automatically place previously identified gifted and talented students into the GT program until they are assessed and determined to be eligible. Each district in Texas is able to set its own criteria for admission into its gifted and talented program based on the services it provides. For previously identified students, CFBISD strives to complete all required assessments within the first six weeks of enrollment.
What kind of documentation do I need to provide to assist with the referral and screening process?
If you have testing information on your child, it is always helpful to share that data with your campus counselor or teacher prior to GT testing. National, state, or district testing information will expedite the screening process.
I am new to the district, and I would like my child tested for the gifted program. What is the process? Who do I contact?
Parents, teachers, or district administrators may refer a child for testing. District testing for current CFB students for our gifted and talented programs is ongoing. Please contact your child’s teacher or school counselor for further information if you would like to refer your child for testing. Because all teachers are teaching classes during the day, your phone calls and emails will be returned as soon as time is available.
How many students are accepted into the GT program each year?
GT identification does not involve a quota. All students who qualify under the district guidelines will be eligible to participate in the gifted and talented program.
Does my child have to re-qualify as he or she moves from elementary school to middle school?
No, an elementary identified GT student does not need to re-qualify.
If I need information about how to refer my child for testing, who do I contact?

If your student is already enrolled in CFBISD, please contact your school counselor.

If your student is not yet enrolled in a CFBISD school, please call 972-968-4370 or at 972-968-4373.
