Eagle Scout Project Brings CHS Student Back to Roots at Rosemeade

Eagle Scout Project Brings CHS Student Back to Roots at RosemeadeCreekview High School freshman, Stephen Adcox, began scouting as a first-grade Tiger Cub Scout at Rosemeade Elementary in 2010, with Pack 735. He is now a Life Rank Scout with Troop 876 and working toward the rank of Eagle Scout. According to the Boy Scouts of America, the rank of Eagle Scout requires several steps based on a foundation of earlier achievements and culminating in a service project, Scoutmaster conference attendance, and a successful completion of a board review.

For Stephen’s service project, he saw a need at his elementary alma mater. The small covered pavilion at the south side of Rosemeade was in need of updating. Stephen worked on the planning and implementation of his project to improve this space for over a year. This resulted in a complete tear-down of the old pavilion and replacing it with a structure better suited for outdoor learning.

A year in the making

Stephen began the funding of his project by selling engraved bricks to raise money for the new outdoor classroom pavilion he envisioned. The over $1900 in engraved bricks have been added to the existing brick path next to Rosemeade. Stephen worked with CFB employees Victor Melton, Scott Behner and former Rosemeade principal, M. Amy Miller to coordinate the stages of tear down and rebuilding.

Support from local businesses

Stephen visited several local hardware stores for donations and supplies. New View Roofing provided free roof supplies and labor to the project. Ace Hardware provided a gift card and discount. Additionally, the Lowe’s at Preston Rd. and the George Bush Tollway provided a large gift card as well for supplies. In October 2018, he oversaw the tear-down of the old pavilion, with a new concrete slab foundation poured in January. The rebuilding of the pavilion was completed in March, and the roofing completed in April.

There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony for the official opening of the pavilion on Friday, May 24, at 7:45 AM.

Statewide Birth Thru Age 5 Needs Assessment Survey

Statewide Birth Thru Age 5 Needs Assessment SurveyCommissioner of Education Mike Morath announced today that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the Texas Early Learning Council are conducting a statewide birth-five needs assessment to better understand the needs of those accessing, providing, and supporting early childhood programs and services for children ages birth to five.

As part of this needs assessment, the Council is conducting a statewide survey from March 25 through April 5, 2019.

The survey is intended for:

  • Families;
  • Staff of early childhood programs and services (childcare, Head Start, public prekindergarten, early childhood intervention (ECI) and home visiting);
  • Staff of early childhood organizations (membership organizations, advocacy organizations, workforce boards, ESCs, etc.); and
  • Community organizations/partners (businesses, health service providers, local governments, religious organizations, etc.).

The survey can be accessed at: https://tea.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cUeyDqwqLh2u8V7.

Questions intended for families and staff of early childhood programs and services are available in both English and Spanish.

The survey results and the statewide needs assessment will be utilized by the Texas Early Learning Council to establish a statewide strategic plan. The strategic plan will focus on improving coordination and collaboration, promoting partnerships, increasing quality, reducing duplicative efforts, efficiently utilizing resources, and easing a child’s transition into kindergarten.

The statewide birth-five needs assessment is required for the Preschool Development Grant awarded to Texas by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Department of Education. This grant is a collaboration between the Texas Department of Agriculture, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, the Texas Department of State Health Service, TEA, the Texas Head Start State Collaboration Office, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, and the Texas Workforce Commission.

Rosemeade Students Learn Basic Engineering in Egg Drop

Students at Rosemeade Elementary participated in a STEM egg drop competition by building egg-protection landing devices. The Roadrunners were given a problem to solve: protect an egg from a significant drop while using limited materials.

Material restrictions

Students were limited to using plastics, straws, cotton, cardboard, tape, string, glue, rubber bands, and similar materials. They were restricted from using helium balloons, and a host of other materials. Students had to allow for a hatch in which to insert the egg. In addition to bragging rights, students learned from the successes and failures during the egg drop event.

They learned how well certain materials behave under stress and what materials work best in distributing impact and vibration.

The Carrollton Fire Department joined in on the experiment by volunteering to drop the student-made devices from the ladder on their fire engine.

The students in Mrs. Thomas’ class are practicing the rules for better letter formation. Tall letters touch the top line, small letters sit on the bottom line, and fall letters go underneath the line. The first-grade students made goals to improve their writing, and letter formation is just one of steps toward this goal.
