Internet Safety Month – Keeping Your Students Safe Online
Students must be internet safe to be successful 21st century citizens. The Internet is a powerful resource used by students for education and entertainment purposes. Librarians spent the month of February teaching CFB students about internet safety. Bookmarks and flyers in both English and Spanish are distributed district wide.
Elementary Level:
 Elementary librarians used special lessons, bookmarks and posters designed to teach the following:
- Cyber Bullying – special emphasis was put on this topic as students learned who is a cyber-bully and what to do if they are being bullied online
- Protecting Personal Information – students were taught to know what their personal information contains (name, address, school name, etc.) and the importance of not sharing this with others over the internet
- Internet Manners – using gaggle.net students were taught how to use email properly
Secondary Level:
Secondary librarians used direct teach lessons, articles about real life events, guest speakers and announcements to teach internet safety topics:
- Cyber Bullying – students were made aware of the consequences of being a cyber-bully as well as how to protect themselves if they become a target
- Protecting Personal Information – lessons covered what is personal information and the importance of not sharing that information online
- Phone texting and its Dangers – included lessons on the content of texting as well as the consequences for using texting incorrectly (i.e. texting and driving)
- Social Media and You – discussed the dangers of social media and particularly the impact it could have on college entrance and future employment
- Copyright Laws – reviewed the copyright laws and the importance of observing these laws when doing school work
- Personal Learning Device Policy – explained the new district policy on usage of personal learning devices (only covered on campuses that are allowing devices)
