Newman Smith High School Presents “Sister Act”

Newman Smith High School One of America’s Best High Schools National Endowment of the Arts Award Winner Proudly Presents: Sister Act Based on the 1992 film, Sister Act tells the story of aspiring disco diva Deloris Van Cartier. Trying to work her way to the top in 1970s Philadelphia, Deloris falls in love with a very tough—and very married—gangster boyfriend named Curtis. When Deloris witnesses him commit a murder, she ends up in hiding on police orders in a convent as a nun. Though the sequin-free lifestyle doesn’t agree with her, Deloris finds her calling working with the choir, and breathes new life into the dusty convent while discovering a sisterhood she’s never had before. Thursday, January 19th, Friday, January 20th, and Saturday, January 21st at 7:00 PM in the Pauline Keeton Smith Performing Arts Center. General Admission Tickets are $10.00. All Reserved Tickets are $12.00. CFBISD employees and Advantage Card Holders receive one free general admission to the show. Tickets can be purchased at nshstheatre.org/musical. United States Military Academy LEADS Conference

Newman Smith High School will host the United States Military Academy LEADS Dallas Conference on January 20, 2017.  Cadets and instructors from West Point will be on campus from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to conduct exciting workshops in VEX Robotics, Renewable Energy, Leadership, Fitness and STEM related careers.  Approximately 200 students from Newman Smith, ROTC and middle school students will participate in the workshops.

Additionally, representatives from sixteen colleges and STEM related industries will be on hand to visit with students.  This is an annual event sponsored by the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.  Newman Smith Assistant Principal LaDacher Jackson is coordinating this event.

Important Tips for Helping Your Child with Guided Reading

KINDERGARTEN PARENTS OFTEN ASK…

“WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP MY CHILD IN READING?”

First, READ, READ, READ to your kindergarten child and HAVE CONVERSATIONS with your child often!

Read everything.

Read signs as you walk or drive home. Read labels in the grocery store. Read books, even if it’s the same book over and over again. Talk about things that you read and about things you see in the world. Ask your child questions and let them ask you questions. Reading is one of the most important skills to master in early childhood education.

Throughout their year in kindergarten, children often bring home-guided reading books or leveled texts to practice at home. In this article, you’ll discover strategies how parents can work on when using early reading texts or guided reading books with their kindergarten child.

La Villita Collects Canned Goods for Irving Cares

La Villita's 5th grade student council (CLAW) collected food for Irving Cares throughout December.  Irving Cares, in partnership with the Irving community is dedicated to effectively serving and assisting Irving residents in need.  La Villita received 2, 726 canned good items in donations for Irving Cares.  This donation provided Irving Cares with additional money, approximately $8400, to help more families.  Great job La Villita!

R.L. Turner Presents Beauty & the Beast

RLT Fine Arts will present Disney’s beloved musical Beauty and the Beast January 19, 20 and 21 at 7:00 p.m. The performances start at 7:00 p.m. Pre-sale tickets are $10 general admission. Considered to be one of the most popular of Disney’s creations, Beauty and The Beast is a “tale as old as time” and appropriate for all ages and audiences. The production boasts a cast of over 70 members, as well as the 2015-2016 winner of both the Dallas Summer Musicals and Schmidt and Jones awards for Best Orchestra, the R. L. Turner Pit Orchestra.

Dairy MAX Presents $65K Grant to CFBISD

dairymaxlogoDairy MAX, Inc. is a local non-profit dairy council, representing more than 950 dairy farm families to 31 million people across southwest Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. Dairy MAX communicates the importance of dairy in a nutrient-rich diet, fosters innovation in dairy promotion and educates about farming and industry practices.  The National Dairy Council, local dairy councils like Dairy MAX, and the NFL, in collaboration with the USDA launched a program in 2009 called Fuel Up to Play 60. FUTP 60 empowers students to fuel up with nutrient foods such as low-fat/non-fat dairy, fruit, veggies, and whole grains and participate in physical activity for 60 minutes each day.

On Jan. 9, Dairy MAX presented CFBISD with a Fuel Up to Play 60 grant for $65,130 for this effort.
