Smith Wrestling News – Paul Aubrey Tournament (Day 1 &2)

December 9 @ Paul Aubrey Christmas Tournament (RL Turner)

After the first night of the 43rd annual Paul Aubrey Christmas Tournament the Trojans still have all four of their varsity boys coming back for day 2. Chris Conway led the way with two pins to run his season mark to 10-3, and he is the only Trojan remaining in the varsity boys’ championship bracket. Anthony Machorro, Kendall Iwuagwu, and Jonathan Johnson are all still fighting in the consolation bracket as each went 1-1 on the evening.

The Trojan ladies wrestled tough again during their tournament. Mackenzie Greer and Barbie Sanchez each won matches, and Neriaha Wofford wrestled well in her two losses. All three girls have improved each week, and as they near the district season in January, they are moving in the right direction.

Wrestling for the JV and varsity boys starts at 9 on Saturday. Come on out and see our boys compete for a special ornament to hang on this year’s Christmas tree!

December 10 @ Paul Aubrey Christmas Tournament (RL Turner)

This year’s Paul Aubrey Tournament represented some major milestones for the Smith wrestling program. Between the JV and varsity boys, the Trojan wrestlers totaled 7 medalists! The following JV wrestlers have some new ornaments to hang on this year’s Christmas tree: Marshall Masvikeni (4th), Caleb Daley (3rd), Jamel Scott (3rd), Darian Dozier (3rd), and Lenyn Carvalho (2nd). Masvikeni, Scott, Dozier, and Carvalho took home medals in their first competitive tournaments.

At the varsity level, three of the four Smith wrestlers that entered the tournament made it to the final round of wrestling. Anthony Machorro battled hard throughout both days and ended with a sixth place finish at 106; Jonathan Johnson was also able to scratch out a fourth place finish at 285; and Chris Conway led the way for the Trojans with his third place finish in the 182 pound class. As the Trojans enter finals week, they will prepare for one more tournament at Wylie on 12/17 before some rest and recovery going into the district season in January.

Newman Smith Wrestling @ Frisco Reedy

The wrestling Trojans traveled to Reedy on Thursday night to battle the Reedy Lions and the Birdville Hawks. Once again the Trojans wrestled with great pride. Although they were small in number, they fought with great enthusiasm. During the JV competition, the Trojans got pins from Marshall Masvikeni, Jamel Scott, and Lenyn Carvalho. The latter two in their first career matches.

The varsity competition heated up quickly when the Trojans took on the Hawks from Birdville. The final score of the dual was 35-24, but of the matches that were wrestled the Trojans had 3 pins to Birdville’s 2. Anthony Machorro, Luis Gonzalez-Rodriguez, and Christopher Conway each pinned their way to victory. The Trojans also received an exhibition match pin victory from Tyrese Lewis after he took the forfeit at 152. Before the dual with Birdville was over, the Trojan ladies got a chance to shine. Freshman Mackenzie Greer and junior Barbie Sanchez each recorded pins. After finishing against the Hawks, the Smith Trojans took on the Reedy Lions.

Reedy won the dual 69-11 as they filled every weight class and came away with eight forfeits totaling 48 points. The Trojans were able to rely on their steady seniors, Lewis and Conway, to keep from being shut out completely. Lewis won by a technical fall and Conway pinned his way to victory once again. In addition to their victories, senior girl Neriaha Wofford closed out Smith’s night with a pin of her own. This group of wrestlers continues to improve, and it should be exciting to see them pitted against some high level competition this weekend at Turner’s Paul Aubrey Holiday Tournament.
