Calendar Input for 2018-2019

The District is seeking input on calendars for the 2018-2019 school year. The District is bringing forward three calendar options.

Calendar Survey

The District is looking into becoming a District of Innovation with one of the parts of the Innovation Plan being flexibility in the school start date. State law dictates currently that school districts cannot begin before the 4th Monday in August. By becoming a District of Innovation, the calendar start date could be adjusted earlier than the 4th Monday. Two of the calendar options are District of Innovation calendars with the school start date before the 4th Monday. One of the calendar options is not a District of Innovation calendar; classes begin on the 4th Monday in August.

The School Board will make their final decision on becoming a District of Innovation at the February Board Meeting. This decision will impact the school calendar options.

Note: There is only one early release day each semester in all three calendars. The State of Texas will no longer grant a Early Release Days Waiver; therefore, CFB reduced the number of Early Release Days in order to meet the number of minimum minutes.

District of Innovation in CFBISD

A District of Innovation (DOI) is a concept passed by the 84th Legislative Session in House Bill 1842, effective immediately, that gives traditional school districts most of the flexibilities available to Texas’ open enrollment charter schools. To access these flexibilities, a school district must adopt an innovation plan as set forth in Texas Education Code chapter 12A.

Using the District of Innovation distinction, a local school district may want to pursue specific innovations in curriculum, instruction, parent or community involvement, school calendar, budgeting, or other ideas. An innovation plan also allows a school district to gain exemption from many Texas Education Code requirements. Essentially, innovation plans will be about local control. Each district can pursue designation as a District of Innovation for different reasons, and no two plans may look the same. Community members should note that each innovation plan will be unique to the local school district.

In CFBISD, the School Board voted to approve the pursuit of developing an Innovation Plan. The Board also appointed a District of Innovation Plan Committee that will work on an Innovation Plan. Once approved by the committee, the Innovation Plan was then presented to the District Improvement Committee for approval. Once approved by the District Improvement Committee, the plan was posted to the district’s website. The School Board will vote on the Innovation Plan at the February School Board Meeting.

The DOI Plan Committee studied the Board’s vision, mission, and goals and the District Improvement Plan and also considered challenges and barriers in existing law that could be alleviated through strategies included in a DOI Plan. The following topics were identified to include in the Plan:

*            First Day of Instruction and possible flexibility in school calendar due to changed first day of instruction

*            Length of Instructional Day for Pre-K

*            Teacher Certification for certain Career and Technology Education instructors, dance teachers at elementary for Fine Arts Academies, and certain World Languages Instructors

The goal of the DOI Plan is to enhance local control and give the District greater flexibility to implement strategies and innovations that support the Board’s mission, vision, and goals, based on community and internal stakeholder input.

Barbara Bush Middle School – December 2017 IB Bulletin

Broncos in Action at Barbara Bush Middle School
The Barbara Bush Bronco Family continues to show their caring side with a fall service project headed up by Student Council.  “Keep Dallas Cozy” is a drive to collect coats and blankets to share with those less fortunate in the DFW area.   Coats and blankets are being collected now in the front office.  You can also donate sweaters, knit hats and gloves.  Keep bringing those in and let’s “Keep Dallas Cozy!”

Trick or Treat for UNICEF
Once again our IB students are helping others through service.  To raise money for UNICEF, students paid $1 to wear a costume on Halloween.  From 3 Blind Mice to Steve Urkel to ET’s helper, many people raised over $200 to send to UNICEF this year.

Tiny Houses in 6th grade Math
IB sixth graders have been collaborating to design and decorate tiny houses.  After learning about area and volume, students used graph paper to design the interior of their own tiny houses.  They calculated the area of various pieces of furniture and then used different materials to decorate their homes.

Success in the One Act Play!
On Friday, Dec. 1, several of our BBMS Broncos participated in the UIL One Act Play competition.  Their performance of “This is a Test” earned them 2nd Place Play among all CFB middle schools.  Jake Hrbacek and Shemaiah Dejorge were named to the All Star Cast, while Keyla was named as Best Technical Crew Member.  Congratulations to the students and to Director Mrs. Kris Henington!

Learner Profile Leaders

The IB Learner Profile are the character traits that we instill in all of our IB world scholars.  When developed together, our students develop their own sense of international mindedness as 21st century global citizens.   Recently, we recognized several students for being Open Minded and for using Inquiry in their learning.  Students enjoyed pizza for lunch, as well as a talk by Ms.Patty Parker, Executive Director of Testing and Accountability for CFBISD.  Students learned how Ms.Parker uses these traits in her personal and professional life.  Congratulations to these Learner Profile Leaders!

Learning in the Makerspace!

Our IB students are engaged in new learning activities in the Makerspace each week!  A variety of materials allows students to tinker, explore and create on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, or on Wednesday afternoons!  Some students make cars, others make arcade games, while others learn about the “insides” of various electronics!
