RLT Cosmetology Runs Full Service Salon

Before and After shots of teacher receiving a new hair style at RLT Cosmetology

RLT Cosmetology runs full service salon on Thursday evenings, 3:35 p.m. – 6 p.m. Students in the R. L. Turner High School cosmetology program recently worked on a before and after project. Students had to enlist volunteer teachers who were willing to try out a new look. Students would then consult and recommend a new style that would be flattering to the client, while meeting the client’s wishes. Students had to make an appointment with their teacher/client to give them their new look. The project helps to shape proper expectations as students prepare to enter the cosmetology field. This is keeping in step with CFBISD’s goal for career readiness. Students are able to add photos of the before and after styles to their portfolios. Several students in the program are slated to take the written exam in April, so they may obtain their state licenses.

RLT Dancers Earn Awards at Competition

RLT Dancers Earn Awards at Competition

RLT Dancers Earn Awards at CompetitionThe RLT dancers earn awards at area competition. On Mar. 3, the Turner High School Lionettes and the men’s dance team participated in the Showtime International competition at Lewisville High School. The men’s team competed with a contemporary routine, receiving a score of 92/100. For their efforts, the men’s team took a Division I trophy and runner up in the contemporary genre category. The RLT men’s dance team is the only all-male group that competes at high school drill/dance competitions. Dance/Drill Team Director, Ali Brittingham, started the men’s group 4 years ago with only 8 participants. The group has grown to 26. Brittingham states, “the men’s team is full of all-around great kids that love to dance and set an example of how a gentleman should act in today’s society.”

At the end of the competition, the Lionettes walked away with Sweepstakes for both the officers and team, scoring a 92/100 or higher on each routine. Additionally, the Lionettes took  theChampion’s Circle for both officers and team. The officers won first place for their contemporary routine. Finally, the Lionettes were also awarded Best High Kick routine. Brittingham elaborates, “our elite team within Lionettes, Inspire, won runner up for the best Large Ensemble routine. And lastly, our Captain, Meaghan Wharton, was a runner up with her solo out of 71 competing solos. Our elite hip hop team, Revolution, won first place for their medium ensemble.”

RLT Student Qualifies for 2018 VASE Competition

RLT Student Qualifies for 2018 VASERLT artist, Bayli Brown, qualifies for  the 2018 VASE Competition. The Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) is a state-level competition for the visual arts. The competition is the visual arts counterpart to UIL competition in Texas. The competition is overseen by the Texas Art Education Association.

On Feb. 24, 21 RLT artists competed at the regional level. Consequently, Brown is one of 60 students to qualify for the state contest. In addition to Brown’s achievement, her fellow artists are basking in the winning of 21 medals. While over 600 high school students in the state compete for a slot in this contest, less than 10% make the cut each year. Brown will represent Turner High School when her work will be judged against other top state competitors in April.
