RLT Holds 2018 Mac & Cheese Drive for Metrocrest ServicesR. L. Turner High School holds 2018 mac & cheese drive for Metrocrest Services. Metrocrest Services is a non-profit organization that assists individuals, families, and senior adults in the CFB community. In the past year, they have provided over 1 million pounds of food to needy families and rent assistance to over 700 households. Students held the drive Apr. 2-13. Over 700 boxes of Mac and Cheese were collected. Coach Belcher’s Advisory class collected the most: 158 boxes.

RLT Graduate Appointed Director of Harvard DepartmentRLT graduate appointed director of Harvard department. Pierre R. Berastaín Ojeda will lead Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response. After graduating from R. L. Turner High School, Berastaín attended Harvard University, where he earned a BA in Social Anthropology and Human Rights in 2011. Additionally, he earned a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School in 2014. “Pierre brings a wealth of policy and practical experience to Harvard,” said Maria Francesconi, acting director for OSAPR and senior director for nursing and health promotion at Harvard University Health Services. Berastaín is also a contributor for the Huffington Post. Free College Tuition for Select CFB High Schools

Free College Tuition for Select CFB High SchoolsFree college tuition for select CFB high schools? No – that’s not a typo! Students at Early College High School, R. L. Turner High School, and Newman Smith High School have the opportunity for:

  • Free tuition at any college in the Dallas County Community College District for all students, regardless of income or GPA.
  • Success Coach support will begin at the end of student’s senior year and continue through college completion. Additional textbook stipend for students meeting income and 2.5 GPA (75 or better on a 100-point scale) requirements.
  • Transfer scholarships available to UNT Dallas and SMU, with more universities coming on board soon.
Dallas County Promise is a transformational effort between school districts, colleges, universities, workforce, and communities to increase college completion. At the core, the promise is a scholarship from the Dallas County Community College District Foundation in partnership with matching university scholarships aligned to high-demand jobs.

Former METSA Grad Uses Engineering Skills in Career

Former METSA Grad Uses Engineering Skills in CareerFormer METSA grad uses engineering skills in career he navigates with drones. Seth Bullis attended the Math, Engineering, Technology, and Science Academy (METSA) at R. L. Turner High School. During that time, he learned the essentials of engineering. The course of study continued for Bullis as he went on to study at Brookhaven College, earning an Associates degree in Geographic Information Science and Cartography. Bullis is now pursuing a 4-year degree and other GIS-related certifications at Texas A&M. While attending METSA, Bullis took part in a dual-credit course in GIS at Brookhaven College in 2013.

According to his professor, J. Scott Sires, Bullis demonstrated unique skills that set him apart from the average GIS student. Bullis has designed drones and used 3D printers to create various parts for his unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Bullis now works as a LiDAR Technician and Data Analyst at Dallas Aerial Surveys. While hoping to eventually work his way into the field of bathymetrics, a discipline that measures and maps the physical features of bodies of water, Bullis builds and repairs drones in his spare time. Read more about Bullis as in the Brookhaven College Courier.

2018 School Lunch Hero DayMay 4 is 2018 School Lunch Hero Day. In addition to preparing healthy meals, CFB school nutrition professionals adhere to strict nutrition standards, navigate student food allergies, and offer service with a smile. Our school lunch employees are true heroes. Who needs a cape when you have an apron? While School Nutrition Employee Week is May 7-11,  the sixth annual School Lunch Hero day will be May 4. It is a day to remember and thank nutrition staff. CFB Poetry Slam Teams Sweep Competition

CFB Poetry Slam Teams Sweep Competition

Four CFB high schools and one middle school formed poetry slam teams to participate in the Young DFW Writer’s Louder Than a Bomb Competition. Ranchview, Creekview, Smith, and Turner High Schools, along with Polk Middle School, competed in the event. The event brings over 10 schools from across the metroplex. CFB schools received the most awards at the competition. Turner High School teacher, Tess Mueggenborg, earned the Teacher of the Year award. She is the second teacher from CFB to ever win this honor. RLT sophpmore Maria Nguyen is the recipient of the Giselle Robinson Literary Scholarship. The $6,000 scholarship is for the University of Pennsylvania’s Summer Writing Institute. The Ranchview team is the recipient of the Chuck D Lyrical Activist Award. The award goes to the team poem that effectively advocates for the recognition of a social issue using poetry. RHS won the award for both of their poems.
