zSpace Visits CFB

zSpace Visits CFBzSpace is a California-based company that utilizes a platform by the same name, that provides highly realistic visualization and natural 3D interaction to designs. Also used by the U.S. military, zSpace allows students to learn through Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality experiences. On Feb. 28, he company visited R. L. Turner and Ranchview High Schools with their interactive trailer. Students were able to enjoy the technology hands-on and see its applications in nearly every area of study. The zSpace trailer is has with 10 computers for students so they may experience objects by “lifting” them off of the computer screen and manipulate them in all angles.

Career & Technology Education

Wearing special glasses, students could see objects such as an automobile engine or a human heart floating in space. Using buttons on the stylus, students were able to look at exploded-views of objects to see how they worked internally. Thanks to haptic feedback in the stylus, students could feel the pulse of blood as it passed through the 3D beating heart floating in front of their screens. CFB’s Career & Technology Education department provides many real world experiences for students interested in various career paths. Students taking part in the Virtual Reality experience with zSpace have interests ranging from computer programming to biochemistry.

Teams from four high schools in CFBISD including Creekview, Newman Smith, R. L. Turner, and Ranchview competed in the tournament. The Creekview High School team was declared champions after the all-day Round-Robin tournament.

2015 RLT Alumna Among Top 25 Stanford Graduates

2015 RLT Alumna Among Top 25 Stanford GraduatesMichelle Bach, a 2015 graduate of R. L. Turner High School, is among the top 25 Stanford graduates for 2019. For being in the top 25 in her class, Bach will receive the prestigious Sterling Award at graduation this May. Stanford University states, “The Sterling Award is one of our most selective academic awards. It is based on overall academic performance. It is presented to the top 25 students each year, who majored in a Humanities and Sciences department or program. President Sterling, for whom the award was named, was a distinguished Chancellor and former President of the university. It was during his tenure, from 1949 to 1968, that Stanford achieved national prominence, in part through Sterling’s efforts to create “steeples of excellence,” clusters of top scholars that would attract the best students in the country.”

BioMed Program

While at Turner, Bach was enrolled in the BioMed Academy. While in BioMed, Bach became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Additionally, Bach was the valedictorian of her graduating class at RLT. Bach stated, “my experiences helped cultivate my interest in medicine and public health. I was able to witness first-hand the invaluable physician-patient interaction.” Bach is graduating with an interdisciplinary major called Science, Technology, and Society. Her extracurricular activities include conducting research, volunteering at a free clinic, teaching, and singing.

When asked for advice she would give to current students in CFB, she stated “Find things that you’re passionate about–something that you absolutely love doing! It could be singing, dancing, sports, research, community service, history, english literature, etc. Continue to pursue those passions in college and in life!”

CTE Field Trip Generates Interest in Careers

On Jan. 29, students gained new interest in careers on the CTE field trip to 4 local businesses. Students in the CTE (Career and Technical Education) program visited Alexandria Industries, Applegate EDM, Hilite International, and Western Extrusions. All four businesses are within a 2 mile radius of the R. L. Turner High School campus, making them strong potential employers for CFB students in the near and distant future. The field trip was offered to interested students in all CFB high schools. Students had the opportunity to learn about welding and manufacturing careers, and to meet people already working in that industry.

Local Support

CTE’s manufacturing and welding community partners are dedicated to creating on-site learning opportunities for students in CFB. Students who were on this trip were given the opportunity to apply for internships and part-time employment. The CTE department is continuing to create strong educational pathways within the district to make students marketable to local employers and beyond.
