R.L. Turner’s Health Occupational Students of America (HOSA) is for students who are interested in participating in the medical field. Â Members participate in a series of competitions at a local, state, and international level to showcase their talents and acquire rewards.
Members can also participate in service projects in order to become involved with their community. Â This year, members will participate in Biomedical Debate, Pharmacology, Public Service Announcement, Veterinary Science, Transcultural Healthcare, and Medical Terminology, and HOSA Chapter Reflection.
To advance to Area, members take a written test to demonstrate their knowledge; once they get to Area, they show their practical skills in front of judges and compete with schools all across North Texas. Many of the members got the opportunity to attend the State conference in Corpus Christi, and to compete with the HOSA competitors in the State of Texas.
HOSA Chapter Reflection collects pictures of all things pertaining to HOSA and makes a scrapbook about the entire R.L. Turner HOSA participation, then it’s judged on an area, state and international level. Turner is now advancing to International level! We also have members participating in the National Service Project (NSP) and Barbara James Service Award (BJSA). Participants must raise a sum of money and volunteer a number of hours in their event.
This year, all of our service project participants acquired enough money and hours to be recognized in the International Leadership Conference, which will take place in Orlando at our international level. All competitors and participants have put forth their best work, and we look forward to next year’s opportunities.

R. L. Turner NJROTC students participated in the annual Sea-Perch STEM competition. RLT’s team placed in the top 10 against 90 other Dallas area school programs. Sea-Perch is an innovative underwater robotics program. The program equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The program provides students with hands on learning about robotics, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Throughout the project, students  learn engineering concepts, problem solving, teamwork, and technical applications.  While presenting their Engineering notebooks, participants receive interviews by a panel of judges regarding careers, statistics and national needs.
The Cadets all participated in building, testing and overcoming mistakes and failures before it was ready to drive. During the practical phase they take the ROV to the CFBISD Natatorium to practice on an obstacle course they also built. Once everyone had time piloting the ROV, they conducted a drivers try-out to identify the best pilots to lead their teams in the up-coming regional competition.
Last week they participated in the Dallas regional competition with over 90 schools taking part. Schools from as far as El Paso and Houston were in attendance. The competitions consisted of 3 phases. First, the Engineering Notebook (ENB) which cadets used to explain their design process to include: sketches, photos, graphs and explanations using engineering terminology. The ENB also has to have a professional appearance.Â
The first part of the event is timed, where students are required to pilot the ROV through six hoops, breech the surface, and return in reverse order to the starting point.  In the Finesse course, participants had to make the ROV to pick up rings and cubes, placing them on hooks within the allotted time. Of the 90 Schools in attendance only the top 7 would advance to Atlanta for the National Competition. While RLT took 9th place overall, the team took first place in the Finesse course. This was the 3rd year RLT NJROTC has competed in Sea Perch advancing farther each year. The future looks bright and the Cadets are extremely excited and motivated to make it to Nationals next year.
The Dallas Morning News has granted R.L. Turner as the best 5A logo in the DFW metroplex, but the competition isn’t over. Â Now, there’s a vote to see who’s best overall.

On Wednesday, March 29th, the Masonic Lodge of Dallas Texas came together to honor public education, and those dedicated to it in the 2017 Lamar Awards. Â One of R.L. Turner’s very own educators, Carolyn Lane, received the Lamar Award of Excellence. Â Also receiving the award was R.L. Turner student, Emely Pena. Â The Lamar Award of Excellence is awarded to students and educators in recognition of outstanding personal achievement in academics, citizenship, community service, or sports. Â The award ceremony was held at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Downtown Dallas.
Congratulations Carolyn & Emely on your outstanding achievement!
Computer Science student, Taylor Riley, was honored last night at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) with an honorable mention award from the National Center for Women in Information Technology (NCWIT). Â She applied for it in September. Â The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors high school women who are active and interested in computing and technology.
This multi-tiered competition includes recognition at the national and local level.  In February, Taylor was notified that she had been selected as a 2017 DFW Affiliate Honorable Mention for the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. Recipients are chosen for their demonstrated interest and achievements in computing; leadership ability; academic history; and plans for post-secondary education. Last night was the award ceremony at UTD, there were about 19 girls.  Taylor received an engraved award for herself and one to give to her school.
Congratulations Taylor and good luck on all your future endeavors!
