Trojan Debaters Declared Co-Champions

Trojan Debaters Declared Co-ChampionsNewman Smith High School debaters Kaushkik Jampala and C.J. Sanchez were declared Co-Champions at the Colleyville Heritage Winter Invitational. Jampala and Sanchez were crowned Co-Champions in the Novice Lincoln Douglas division of Debate. The Trojan debaters beat competitors from Grapevine, Greenhill, Southlake Carroll, and Trinity Valley Christian High Schools in a display of determination. Additionally, Jampala was named the 2nd overall Speaker in the division and received a special award for his speaking ability.  Smith High School teacher, Chris Agee, stated, “Great win! Practice and hard work are paying off for the NSHS Debate Team!”

Trojan Swim Team Ends 2018 Season on High Note

Trojan Swim Team Ends 2018The Newman Smith High School Trojan swim team ends 2018 swim season with a bang. The team represented NSHS at the Regional Swim and Dive Championships on Feb. 3.

All four relay teams qualified for finals and individual swims. The girls medley relay team had their best time in prelims, dropping 3 seconds off from their district time. The boys’ 200m freestyle relay team also had a personal best at finals. The 200m medley relay team and 400m freestyle relay team had strong showings.

Swimmers Carys Kelly and Eleanna Martinez qualified their individual swims for regionals. Carys qualified in the 100m freestyle, while Martinez had a best time in her 200m.

On the boys’ team, Cody Imthurn had a personal best time in the 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke, which qualified for Saturday’s final. Additionally, Rhett Jamesmeyer had his personal best time in 50m freestyle, also qualifying for Saturday finals. Eden Nguyen’s personal best time in the 500m freestyle, while Vince Nguyen had a personal best time in his 200m.

Congratulations to all CFBISD divers and the four boys that qualified for February 1st Regional diving championships! The divers moving onto Regionals will be Nate Phillips of Turner, Napoleon Ferrer of Smith, Jack Texada of Smith and Steven Fry of Smith.

Smith High School Presents “Little Shop of Horrors”

Smith High School theater will present the musical, Little Shop of Horrors, Jan. 26-27. Based on the 1960’s film, Little Shop of Horrors, the musical tells the story of the meek floral assistant, Seymour Krelborn. Seymour stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II.”  Taking the moniker from his workplace crush, this R&B-singing, blood-eating plant promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Seymour. As long as he keeps feeding Audrey II what it wants, that is. Through unfortunate events, Seymour soon discovers Audrey II’s out of this world origins and alarming intent of global domination!

CFBISD’s 3rd Annual African-American Read-In

CFBISD's 3rd Annual African American Read-InThe directors of English language arts and reading, invite you, your students, and staffs to join us for CFB’s third annual African American Read-In, which will be held at Barbara Bush Middle School on Tuesday, February 6, at 6:00 p.m.  Please bring one of your favorite selections written by an African American author to read or perform at this event.

We are joining the National Council of Teachers of English, its Black Caucus, and others by hosting this literary event during Black History Month.  It will be our pleasure to add your name to this list of readers for the National African American Read-In, the nation’s first and oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature.

Smith Debaters Take 1st Place at 2017 McMurry University Debate Tournament

Smith Debaters Win 2017 McMurry University Debate Tournament

On December 1-2, the Newman Smith High School Debate team competed at the 2017 McMurry University Debate tournament. This is the fourth year in a row that the Newman Smith High School Debate Team won 1st place in the Lincoln-Douglas competition. Lincoln-Douglas debates are a type of one-on-one debate style. The format places a heavy emphasis on logic, ethical values, and philosophy. The debate format is named for the 1858 debate between Abraham Lincoln and Steven Douglas.

Individual results are as follows

Hannah Smith: 1st place Lincoln Douglas Debate. 5th place Extemporaneous Speaking
Elizabeth Ghil: 6th place Extemporaneous Speaking
Raiden Woolery: Octa-Finalist Lincoln Douglas Debate
