Newman Smith Students to Visit Guri City, South Korea

Newman Smith High School in Carrollton announced that a group of 14 students and three instructors will visit Guri, South Korea from June 6th to June 18th. Principal Joe Pouncy explained, “The exchange student program began when Carrollton’s Economic Development’s Mr. Brad Mink picked Guri as a sister city in 2007.”

The first exchange student program was in 2010, when a group of 27 Korean students visited Newman Smith. Since then, more than 15 students have visited Newman Smith every year for two weeks.

The purpose of this program is to understand each other through music, food, and other cultural activities and to provide an opportunity to make life-long friends.

Ms. Soo Kim, the sponsor of the program and a math teacher at Newman Smith High School, said students motivated each other to study harder, developed effective study habits, and learned about their own culture from the other country’s point of view through the host-family program.

Principal Pouncy said, “Students from Guri took pride in representing Korea, and they were enthusiastic about learning from and teaching Newman Smith students about each other’s culture.”

This year is the second time Smith students are visiting Korea, following the first exchange students in 2014.

Principal Pouncy also said, “Unlike Korean students who receive financial support from the city, Smith students need to pay all of their expenses by themselves, making it difficult to visit Korea annually.”

Students who visited Korea in 2014 had a positive influence on other students and teachers of Newman Smith, making it possible to make this year’s visit. Newman Smith High School teachers appreciated that many students are continuously showing their interest in Korea despite the difficulty of paying for their trip.

Principal Pouncy has asked Koreans in Dallas for attention and support in order to continue this program, and he hopes to adopt Korean as an official school subject. He also hopes that both students who speak Korean as their native language and others who learned it as a foreign language will learn how to understand and embrace cultural differences through this program, setting an example for the students of the other schools.

Smith Wrestling vs. Wiley East & Melissa

Trojan wrestling had a spectacular night tonight as we took home our first two dual meet wins of the season versus Wiley East and Melissa. Our Trojans fought tough against the host school, Wiley East, with a 28-24 victory. While both programs competed valiantly, in the end, the Trojans proved to be too much for their opponents. Notable victories in the first dual of the evening went came from Chris Conway, who continues to impress in his first year of competition, and Darien Dozier. Both young men won each of their matches on the evening.

In the second dual of the evening, the Trojan wrestlers accomplished something that hasn’t happened during Coach Pierce’s tenure, and probably hasn’t happened in quite some time. The Trojan boys’ team wrestled the Melissa boys’ team and shut them out. Again, neither team fielded all fourteen weight classes, but once the coaches matched up the wrestlers, the Trojans went on to a 42-0 victory. Not included in that score were two JV matches that were also both won by the Trojans, and most impressive was the fact that every victory was a pin!

Following the boys’ matches, the Trojan girls went 1-1 with Neriaha Wofford pinning her opponent, but Barbie Sanchez took a hard fought loss. This night marks the second of the Trojans four district dual nights. The third will be next week on Thursday night when the Trojans travel to RL Turner to take on the Lions and Creekview Mustangs in the Battle of Carrollton. Wrestling is scheduled to start at 6:00, so make the short trip to Turner and show your Trojan Pride!

Smith Wrestling vs. Lovejoy & McKinney North

The Trojans hosted their only home meet of the season last night. Our seniors were honored before the start of the wrestling, and they rose to the occasion. Senior Neriaha Wofford defeated her only opponent of the night against Melissa High School. The three senior boys all competed well and were led by Tyrese Lewis who won both of his matches versus Lovejoy and McKinney North. Chris Conway went 1 and 1 on the evening with a victory versus Lovejoy and a hard fought loss to a tough opponent from McKinney North. Rafael Leon lost both of his matches by decision, but he competed well and exhibited great pride throughout. Kendall Iwuagwu took home the only other Trojan victory on the varsity boys’ side with a victory over his opponent from Lovejoy by fall while Mackenzie Greer took home another victory for the girls with a win against her opponent from Melissa. Although the varsity Trojans lost both of their duals on the evening, they competed hard and are improving as they prepare for the district tournament in February.

The Trojans also got great efforts from several of their JV wrestlers last night. The JV squad was led by sophomore Lenyn Carvalho with two victories on the evening. Freshmen Marshall Masvikeni, Jamel Scott, and Cayden Parrott all wrestled tough throughout the night.
