Ranchview High School Alumni Wins Prestigious White House Correspondents’ Association Scholarship

The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District is proud to announce that Jessica Grider, Ranchview High School alumnus, has been awarded the Cokie Roberts Scholarship from the White House Correspondents’ Association.

The Cokie Roberts Scholarship is named for the veteran Congressional and political correspondent for NPR, PBS and ABC News.

Meet Scholarship Winner Jessica Grider

Grider is a Junior majoring in Broadcast Journalism and a Howard University Capstone Four Year Academic Scholar. She has interned at the BBC’s DC Bureau and is currently a College Associate at Fox News Channel, covering events in the Capitol Building.

She published an article, “Serving After the Storm”, featuring the hungry families that were in urgent need of proper aid after significant food stamp cuts complicated hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.

“Our 25 WHCA scholars this year are an impressive and ambitious group that should give us all hope for the next generation,” said WHCA president Jonathan Karl. “These are students from diverse backgrounds who have already accomplished a great deal. I have no doubt they will go on to do great things in journalism or whatever path they choose to pursue.”

What are the White House Correspondent Scholarships

According to the WHCA website, the WHCA began awarding scholarships in 1991. The association started helping journalism students in 1991, it has awarded more than $1.4 million in scholarships and leveraged another $1.2 million in aid.

The scholarships are financed by proceeds from the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner and donations to the WHCA. This year we are especially grateful for donations from ABC News and Fox News.

RHS Golfer Qualifies for USGA Competition

RHS Golfer is USGA Qualifier

RHS Golfer, Bohyun Park, is continuing to dominate tournaments after her 2nd back-to-back UIL State Championships. Park, who will be a junior at Ranchview High School in the fall, shot a 1-under 71 at the Eldorado Country club to qualify for the U.S. Girls’ Junior tournament. At the Jun. 17 event, Park tied with 3 other Texans and a golfer from the People’s Republic of China. The U.S. Girls’ Junior Championships will begin Jul. 22 in Stevens Point, WS. The SentryWorld golf course opened in 1982 and has a par of 72.

U.S. Girls Junior Championships

Established in 1949, the event drew a starting field of 28 girls from 17 states. The event has grown, with 1,559 entries received for 2019. The event is open to any female amateur players who have not reached the age of 19 by Jul. 21 and whose handicap index does not exceed 9.4. The event will see competitors from across the country and from across the world. While in its history, the winners have mostly been from the U.S., past winners have included golfers from France, South Korea, Paraguay, Taiwan, and Chile.

Countdown to Graduation at the UNT Coliseum

Graduation ceremonies at the UNT Coliseum are a CFB tradition and a time for life-long memories. As you make your drive to Denton and enjoy visits from out-of-town relatives on this momentous occasion, we want you to be prepared for your arrival. The University of North Texas has implemented new rules this year regarding activities inside and what can be brought into the venue.

When

Graduation will be held on Sunday, Jun. 2, at the UNT Coliseum.
9 AM – Newman Smith Graduation
1 PM – Turner Graduation
4 PM – Creekview Graduation
7 PM – Ranchview Graduation

Parking

Arrive early and carpool as much as possible. Allow for extra time to park and walk some distance from your car to the ceremony.
Don’t rely on your GPS – you will be taking the North Texas Boulevard Exit to access the UNT campus from I-35.
There will be signage and UNT Police officers guiding traffic around the Coliseum.

UNT Coliseum Polices

No seat-saving. This is a policy of the UNT Coliseum. There will be more than enough seating available for all guests. Arriving early is the best way to find the best vantage point for you and your family.
With the exception of seats for graduates, special commencement guests and district personnel, there are no reserved seats.
ALL individual bags will be checked as people enter the Coliseum. Prepare before you arrive. If you don’t need that bag, leave it in the car or at home. 🙂

Tickets

We do not have tickets for graduation and we do not limit the number of seats per student. Got a gigantic entourage? Awesome! But make sure they arrive early, or they may not all be sitting together.

Forbidden items

Balloons (we know – they’re a thing – but not a Coliseum thing) 🙂
Beach balls
Noise makers, bullhorns, etc.
Silly string, bubbles, glitter or any other similar items that people can slip on or get in their eyes.
Signs or banners (we know! but you still have time to make fun shirts with your messages – signs will not be allowed in the Coliseum
Tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, drones, etc. Ask a friend to take your picture. They will totally do it.
Any tobacco products or devices for smoking or vaping. UNT is a smoke-free campus inside and out.
Strollers inside the seating area. Strollers can be used to bring young children into the Coliseum only.
