On Feb. 22, McCoy Elementary hosted their Cowboy Mall. Students came up with ideas for businesses – either with goods to sell or services to provide, so that parents and staff could give them feedback on their ideas by way of commerce. Adult visitors were issued play money as they entered the gymnasium and student teams competed for their business. Some students sold crafts they had made themselves, some provided beverages or dessert, and others provided services in the form of entertainment including a magic show and fortune telling. Some students were so successful, they sold out of their products. Visitors included CFB Superintendent Dr. John Chapman, and Carrollton Mayor Kevin Falconer.

Preparing CFB Students for the Future With AVID
AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, in CFBISD is providing a support system to look at a future that many students didn’t think was possible. AVID is an opportunity to close the gap for students who might not have the same opportunities as others. Regardless of their life circumstances, AVID students overcome obstacles and achieve success. They graduate and attend college at higher rates, but more importantly, they can think critically, collaborate, and set high expectations to confidently conquer the challenges that await them. AVID is making a difference in the lives of our students in elementary, middle and high school.
District Hosts eSports Tournament
The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District, along with Java Gaming Café, hosted its first-ever League of Legends eSports Tournament on Feb. 23.
Teams from four high schools in CFBISD including Creekview, Newman Smith, R. L. Turner, and Ranchview competed in the tournament. The Creekview High School team was declared champions after the all-day Round-Robin tournament.
Purpose
The purpose of the tournament was to raise awareness of eSports scholarship monies available to high school seniors from several colleges and universities across the country. CFBISD is exploring launching competitive gaming teams at its five high schools in the future.
Popularity
eSports has gained popularity recently as more and more competitive gaming teams are popping up throughout the United States. The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex seems to be a hotbed for esports opportunities with the City of Arlington set to open a $10 million, 100,000-square foot gaming arena.
CFBISD is always looking for opportunities for our students. The district wants our students to be passionate about their future. With esports growing in popularity, CFBISD hopes to help students learn more about eSports and help them pursue careers in the industry.
WFAA Features CHS Mock Trial
On Feb. 16, students on the Creekview High School Mock Trial team were featured on WFAA Channel 8. Mock Trial has won at State six times – five in the last six years. Going for a sixth win in seven years, the team heads back to state competition Feb. 28 – Mar. 2.
The Team
The team includes attorneys Allen Mason, Kassandra Busby, and Liza Frolova; witnesses Jazmin Torres, Harris Pierce, and Yusraa Tariq; paralegal Isabella Barkat; and coach Brian Sheguit.
This year, the team faces a criminal manslaughter case regarding a patient who had a fatal allergic reaction to medication. Additionally, a hacker puts the hospital’s paperless records system offline demanding a ransom. It is loosely based on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.
CFBISD Takes Important Actions to Strengthen Security
District Hires Director to Oversee Changes in Security Operations
The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District recently hired Mario De La Rosa as the Director of Safety and Security. Before coming to CFBISD, Mr. De La Rosa spent his career in law enforcement as well as safety and security management. After a long and decorated career as a U.S. Federal agent, Mr. De La Rosa worked in Mission ISD and most recently served as the Director of Safety and Security for Round Rock ISD.
As a new position for the district, the focus will be on the implementation of the policies and procedures regarding safety and security at the district’s 37 campuses. In partnership with local law enforcement agencies and other emergency services, CFBISD has adopted a comprehensive approach to addressing school safety focused on prevention, intervention and response. CFBISD is proactively implementing the findings and recommendations of the safety and security assessment conducted by the True North Consulting Group.
The safety and security of the students and staff of CFBISD is our number one priority. Throughout the year, CFBISD will provide updates regarding safety and security.
