Students Participate in Texas Walks 2017

Students at Field Middle School and Farmers Branch Elementary participated in the Texas Walks 2017 campaign. In an effort to improve the health of Texans state-wide, It’s Time Texas calls for Texans to walk for 10 minutes on October 10.  Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director of the CDC states, “Physical Activity is the closest thing we have to a wonder drug.” In this effort, students and communities across the state are walking while promoting healthier lifestyles. It’s Time Texas is a nonprofit organization that is focused on improving health and wellness in Texas. They provide free programs, tools, and services to empower Texans to lead healthier lives. During the activity, teachers and students at Farmers Branch Elementary walked across their soccer field. While the FBE students were walking, the students and staff at Field Middle School walked around their campus.

How You Can Help Houston-area Evacuees in Our Area

How You Can Help Houston-area Evacuees in Our Area

How You Can Help Houston-area Evacuees in Our AreaAs we in the CFB community have watched the events unfold to our south, our hearts have broken as we wonder how we can help Houston-area flood victims. Because of the rising water, many of our neighbors from the south have headed to our area for shelter and for school. For those interested in making an immediate impact on the lives of our new neighbors, Metrocrest Services is taking donations for this effort. Metrocrest Services is a local charitable organization that supports individuals and families in the CFB community. The organization provides food, clothing, classes, and more for the people they serve. Due to the surge of Hurricane Harvey refugees, food and hygiene items are currently their biggest needs.

If you’d like to help but are unable to donate at this time, another way you can help is to volunteer for Metrocrest Services.

Please visit the Metrocrest Services website for more information on the specific needs for our new students, families, and neighbors from Houston and surrounding areas.

CFBISD Joins the Dynamic Learning Project, a National Educator Coaching Program

CFBISD Joins the Dynamic Learning Project, a National Educator Coaching Program

Dynamic Learning ProjectJuly 25, 2017 | Carrollton, TX– The Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD (CFBISD) Middle Schools (Blalack, Bush, Field, Long, Perry and Polk) are six of 50 schools joining the pilot year of the Dynamic Learning Project, a national program supported by Digital Promise, EdTechTeam, and Google, aimed at improving education equity by empowering teachers to leverage technology in more powerful ways.

The CFBISD Middle Schools were selected for the program by Digital Promise based on need (measured by percentage of students eligible for free and reduced lunch), existing technology infrastructure, and innovative leadership committed to helping their teachers succeed.

“CFBISD is excited to be a part of this project knowing that coaching in the area of technology in our Middle Schools will have a dynamic impact on the instruction and achievement in our classrooms,” said Georgeanne Warnock, CFBISD Associate Superintendent of Educational Services. “This investment in our school district is appreciated and we look forward to watching the innovation continue to flourish in our classrooms.”

The Dynamic Learning Project is designed to help deliver on the promise of technology by investing in a school’s greatest assets: teachers. It’s not just about access to technology, but how prepared teachers feel to meaningfully use that technology in their classrooms. The Dynamic Learning Project will sponsor and train a coaching fellow, in most cases a former classroom teacher, who will provide personalized, tech-based coaching to help educators in their community leverage technology in transformative ways.

The coaching fellows will be embedded in 50 underserved middle schools in five regions across the U.S. The full list of participating schools and more information on the project can be found here.

EdTechTeam Dynamic Learning Project“It’s imperative that teachers are supported as they create new and powerful learning environments so students are prepared for the jobs of the future,” said Karen Cator, President and CEO of Digital Promise. “Early research studies point to the positive impact of educator coaching on teacher practices and student achievement. We’re thrilled to work with Google and EdTechTeam, to bring the Dynamic Learning Project to CFBISD schools.”

Coaching fellows and principals at participating schools will:

  • Work with teachers to apply best practices in the powerful use of technology for teaching and learning;
  • Promote a culture of openness, personalized professional development, and continuous improvement between faculty and administration; and
  • Engage with other coaching fellows and their principals to share knowledge and build community of support.

In addition to coaching fellows and principals, the program will extend to benefit the entire school and school district, as well as the broader community.

The Dynamic Learning Project officially welcomed the 2017-2018 cohort coaches and principals at a week-long Summer Institute hosted by Digital Promise at the Google headquarters in Mountain View, CA.

Google Dynamic Learning Project“At Google, we believe in the power of educators. Technology is just a tool; it can only be transformative when it’s in the hands of an educator who uses it to create meaningful experiences for students,” said Liz Anderson, Head of Social Impact Programs at Google for Education. “We’re excited to support such a dedicated group in laying the groundwork for innovative use of technology in classrooms across the country.”

CFB in History – Original Logo Designed in 1976 by Field Middle School Student

CFB in History – Original Logo Designed in 1976 by Field Middle School Student

Original Logo Designed in 1976 by Randy Dornan, Field Middle School 8th graderCFBISD’s first official logo was designed in 1976 by a Field Middle School Student, after holding a logo contest. There were over 130 entries from CFB schools. The slogan for the logo contest was, “Liberty for Education – Hand in Hand.”

Field Middle School’s Randy Dornan, who was in 8th grade at the time, won the contest. Dornan attended McLaughlin Elementary prior to attending Field and graduated from R. L. Turner High School in 1981. Dornan’s design continued to be the official logo of the district through 1993, when a new design was implemented.

The design contest was heavily influenced by the Bicentennial celebrations throughout the country as the United States of America celebrated its 200th birthday. The slogan for the logo had a bicentennial influence and that influence was not lost on Dornan, who stated that he remembers seeing the famous Liberty Bell being moved to Independence Hall on TV that year.

In addition to the pride in seeing his logo design implemented throughout the district, he also received a $25 US savings bond for winning the contest. Dornan shared memories of his favorite teachers, including Ted Polk, for whom Ted Polk Middle School was later named, in the video below.

Important Information Regarding the Zika Virus

School Superintendents and School Board Members:

Thank you for your commitment to the education of the school children of Texas. We know the impact of our schools extends well beyond the walls of their campuses and into the communities they serve. As the school year draws to a close, mosquito season is just beginning. As hubs of your community, we are asking for your help in preventing the spread of Zika by providing your students and their families with additional information.

Zika is primarily spread through mosquito bites (Aedes aegypti species). As the weather warms and mosquito activity increases, we expect the threat of local mosquito transmission of Zika to resume and persist. Pregnant women are particularly at risk due to the Zika virus’ ability to cause birth defects in unborn infants. We must ensure that their families and their communities are educated on ways they can prevent the spread of Zika. The public health measures we take together will help prevent serious health impacts on the next generation of Texans.

Combatting Zika begins at the local level. When done in concert, these simple steps represent a big step toward preventing the spread of Zika:

  • Apply EPA-approved insect repellant when planning to be outdoors.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and wear long pants when outdoors for prolonged periods.
  • Utilize screens or close windows and doors.
  • Regularly remove any standing water in and around your home or school that could provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
  • Cover trash cans or containers that may collect water.
  • Visit your doctor if you suspect you’ve been exposed to Zika or exhibit any of the symptoms of Zika, which may include fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes.

For your convenience, we have enclosed flyers (below) that identify the steps outlined above. Disseminating these flyers to your school children as the school year draws to an end provides an easy method for educating your community and ensuring that, together, we can prevent the spread of Zika.

DSHS’ website dedicated to Zika (www.TexasZika.org) has a variety of other free information and materials —in English and Spanish – available for download and order. DSHS has created a Zika communications toolkit for organizations interested in sharing important information with their stakeholders, including employees, school-aged children and their families, and it features newsletter copy, social media content, and more. The website also includes website banners and other shareable graphics; we ask you to please post and share these images on your ISD and school websites and social media platforms.

We encourage all schools and communities to take action now to address the threat of the Zika virus in Texas this summer. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us or your local health department as we work together to limit locally-transmitted cases of Zika in Texas and help you prepare school campuses for the summer months. Please feel free to send any questions to TexasZika@dshs.texas.gov. Thank you for your assistance in this important public health matter.

Sincerely,
Greg Abbott (Governor), John Hellerstedt (M.D. Commissioner, DSHS), Mike Morath (Commissioner, TEA)
