Middle School Hoops for Heart Event Partners with American Heart Association

Middle School Hoops for Heart event partners with the American Heart Association. Hoops for Heart is a fun event where students can play basketball, learn about their hearts (and how to keep them healthy), while raising money for the American Heart Association. All 6 CFB middle schools participated in the event, raising over $130K for the American Heart Association. Over 70 schools across the metroplex, with all 6 CFB schools in the top 20 in fundraising. Polk Middle School, Blalack Middle School, and Perry Middle School were the top 3 fundraising schools in the metroplex, with Perry being the top fundraiser overall. Perry raised over $14K in the event.

Michael Finley Foundation Presents Opportunities to Select 3rd-7th Grade Students

The Michael Finley Foundation presents their annual G.I.F.T.4.S. for summer at Long Middle School. Forty students will be selected, so spots are limited. The event will take place July 9 – 26, 7:15 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The last day will consist of academics in the morning and a celebration in the afternoon. Free breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon snacks will be served. Students are selected based on the application criteria and parents who commit to supporting their children through the summer and throughout the school year. Please direct inquiries to Jean Moore, Executive Director of the Michael Finley Foundation, at 469-630-2854. The Michael Finley Foundation website has the applications online in English and Spanish.

2018 School Lunch Hero Day

May 4 is 2018 School Lunch Hero Day. In addition to preparing healthy meals, CFB school nutrition professionals adhere to strict nutrition standards, navigate student food allergies, and offer service with a smile. Our school lunch employees are true heroes. Who needs a cape when you have an apron? While School Nutrition Employee Week is May 7-11, the sixth annual School Lunch Hero day will be May 4. It is a day to remember and thank nutrition staff. Let CFB know about your favorite Student Nutrition employee. Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District is hosting its dyslexia parent education program on Thursday, February 22, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. in the Carrollton Room of the Educational Services Division Complex (Building B) located at 1820 Pearl Street, Carrollton, TX 75006.

Please plan to spend approximately one hour learning about the needs of dyslexia students and how these needs are addressed in the classroom.

The directors of English language arts and reading, invite you, your students, and staffs to join us for CFB’s third annual African American Read-In, which will be held at Barbara Bush Middle School on Tuesday, February 6, at 6:00 p.m. Please bring one of your favorite selections written by an African American author to read or perform at this event.

We are joining the National Council of Teachers of English, its Black Caucus, and others by hosting this literary event during Black History Month. It will be our pleasure to add your name to this list of readers for the National African American Read-In, the nation’s first and oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature.

For the 2018-2019 school year, CFBISD will provide its own transportation services. The District will no longer use Dallas County Schools for transportation. CFBISD is in the process of hiring drivers and monitors as well as establishing routes for the school year.

Field Students Visit Brain Performance Institute

To learn more about their brains, Field students visit Brain Performance Institute. Students from Field Middle School learned how complex the brain is and how much information it can hold. Students were encouraged to understand how their brains work, especially when emotions are involved. Attendees learned ways that they can learn to “self-regulate” their emotions when they are upset. Field was the only school present for the institute’s grand opening. Speaking at the event was Dr. Jacquelyn Gamino, inventor of the SMART Program. Sixth grade students at Field are learning the SMART Program and using it in all their classes.
