Inventing the Future at SAGE 1

Students identified as Gifted and Talented have the option to attend SAGE at Perry Middle School during the summer. First-grade students in SAGE 1 class are inventing new ways to do things with their imaginations. Students are learning how inventions make our lives easier. Using cardboard, plastic cups, tape and other objects, students in SAGE 1 are building their own versions of refrigerators, dishwashers, and other objects they’re familiar with, yet have some room for improvement. This is just one of many projects these students engage in as they solidify their understanding of more complex topics for their age-group. SAGE classes will continue through June 29.

Robotics and More at SAGE 4

Students identified as Gifted and Talented have the option to attend SAGE at Perry Middle School during the summer. Fourth-grade students in Ms. Brantley & Ms. Lyons’ SAGE 4 class are learning to program with Lego Mindstorms to solve programming problems. Whether racing their vehicles against those of other students or completing a maze with specific criteria, students are learning to solve complex programming problems. Much like the unmanned rover on Mars, these young programmers are having to take into account the weight of the vehicle, its center of gravity, its speed along the course and the tasks it needs to perform. Students are able to update their programming via iPad. The competitive nature of the activities is very motivating for students to solve challenges with increased complexity.  SAGE classes will continue through June 29.
