Code Breakers at Exploration Academy

Students attending Exploration Academy at Perry Middle School this summer have the option to take two enrichment classes in their areas of interest. Students in Mr. Perez’s “Code Breakers” class are learning to code using fun games and activities such as Minecraft, Frozen, and Star Wars. Students are able to explore the world of coding through code.org and using MIT programs such as Scratch. Students start with simple algorithms to more advanced techniques. Students create fairly complex video games that can be shared with friends. While using both drag-and-drop and raw code elements, students are learning the higher concepts of programming and problem-solving.  Exploration Academy classes will continue through June 29.

Tecky Kids at Exploration Academy

Students attending Exploration Academy at Perry Middle School this summer have the option to take two enrichment classes in their areas of interest. Students in Ms. Solorzano’s “Tecky Kids” class are learning to explore, create, and collaborate through various coding tools such as Bloxels and Spheros. Students and design complex maps for their Spheros to follow. Students also learn how to make complex games with Bloxels. With each colored block representing a block of corresponding code, students learn concepts in object-oriented programming.  Exploration Academy classes will continue through June 29.

Field Student’s Essay Earns Trip to Washington, D.C.

Field Middle School 8th grader, Juliana Rios, has been awarded a trip to Washington, D.C. Rios composed an essay for the Do The Write Thing Challenge 2018. Rios’ essay advocated for teens to play a role in violence awareness. Whether it’s through the music they listen to, TV shows they watch, or social media posts they engage in; Rios challenged young people, to pay a bigger role in taking action against violence. Students from across the country were asked to participate in the Do The Write Thing Challenge. Rios’ essay was one of two final selections from our area out of 370 competing entries in the same region. Rios will spend 4 days in Washington, D.C. with a parent, and Field Middle School’s Community in Schools representative, Brenda Flores. As part of her stay, she will participate in National Recognition Week activities. Her essay, along with other jurisdiction’s winners, will be published and distributed to business, community and governmental leaders. Rios will continue her academic journey at Early College High School next school year.

My Artistic World at Exploration Academy

Students attending Exploration Academy at Perry Middle School this summer have the option to take two enrichment classes in their areas of interest. Students in Ms. Bowling’s “My Artistic World” class are learning about the art and culture in three countries; Japan, Mexico, and Spain. They are also studying the art of famous artists from those lands; Yayoi Kusama, Frida Kahlo, and Salvador Dali. Students are learning about the artistic and cultural influences in each region while learning new types of art materials and techniques. Exploration Academy classes will continue through June 29.

Art Factory at Exploration Academy

Students attending Exploration Academy at Perry Middle School this summer have the option to take two enrichment classes in their areas of interest. Students in Ms. Pope’s “Art Factory” class are learning to be inspired by what they read and incorporate that into their art. Students in Art Factory class are learning to create model magic fancy flowers, hand-painted necklaces, papier-mâché birds, woven butterflies, and more. Students are learning to use art materials they have not handled before, as well as make stories come alive by creating artistic expressions of characters in books that they are reading. Exploration Academy classes will continue through June 29.

Exploration Academy Students Learn that Art Rocks

Students attending Exploration Academy at Perry Middle School this summer have the option to take two enrichment classes in their areas of interest. Students in Ms. Melton’s “Art Rocks” class are learning different painting methods, weaving, drawing, and more. On June 15, students in the class were learning a new method for manipulating paint; air movement and gravity. While trying to simulate the wispy tentacles on a jellyfish, students learned they could blow through a straw to direct the flow and appearance of paint. Exploration Academy classes will continue through June 29.

Sandra Lieck Named Region 10 Nurse Administrator of the Year

Sandra Lieck Named Region 10 Nurse Administrator of the YearCFB Nurse Administrator, Sandra Lieck, was nominated for the Texas School Nurses Organization Region 10 Nurse Administrator of the Year by her peers in the district. The organization selected Lieck as the winner of this honor. Texas school districts are divided into 20 regions. Region 10 encompasses CFBISD and 80 other districts in North Texas. Davis Elementary Nurse, Debra Wise, stated, “We are very excited for Sandra, who is very deserving of this honor. Sandra demonstrates many of the skills and the dedication to her job that earned her this honor. We are proud and elated for her and our district.”

CFBISD Attains Highest Graduation Rate in District History

The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District made history by attaining a 95.2% graduation rate.  “Through deliberate focus on each student, the CFBISD team has made great gains in the graduation rate. Our graduation teams support each individual student, they learn their story, and they help the student achieve. Our commitment to every student is paying off,” said Dr. Bobby Burns, superintendent.  The 2016 graduation rate was 94.3%. The District has seen a steady increase in the graduation rate since 2008 when the graduation rate was 82.5%. Capital One Employees Volunteer to Beautify Field Campus

Capital One Employees Volunteer to Beautify Field CampusNearly 70 employees from the Capital One Plano office spent the day beautifying the campus of Vivian Field Middle School. The employees, part of the Analyst Group in the Auto Finance Division, landscaped the front of the campus and painted the halls of the school.

Kevin Haynes, Capital One Community Service Team leader said, “We really like to reinvest back into our community.”

Capital One encourages its employees to give back to the local community through service projects each quarter. The culture of giving at Capital One was evident as the employees beautified the school.

Stephanie Jimenez, principal, said, “The partnership between the Capital One employees and CFBISD is an opportunity to engage in the betterment of their shared community.”
