Every CFBISD Secondary Student Will Have a Laptop for the 2018-2019 School Year

Every CFBISD Secondary Student Will Have a Laptop for the 2018-2019 School Year**UPDATE** Over the past three years, CFB has purchased Chromebooks (grades 3-12) and iPads (grades PreK-2) to build the digital learning experience of students.  Over three years, the Board of Trustees allocated approximately $7 million from local funds and from the Instructional Materials Allotment provided by TEA to purchase devices.  The district phased in the devices to allow for incremental purchase and to create a reasonable replacement cycle.  Teachers have received training in digital learning practices over the past several years to prepare for the eventual 1:1 roll-out. For 2018-19, CFB will launch 1:1 experience for students in grades 6-12.

Every 6th-12th grade student in CFBISD will begin the year with a Chromebook to use for schoolwork and homework. At this stage of the one-to-one technology program, each student will be assigned a laptop (Chromebook) that the student will take to each class and home in the evenings. Much like a textbook, the Chromebook will be checked out to the individual student.

In CFBISD, we believe technology can transform learning in a powerful way. Technology is designed to be used for any time anyplace learning. Having consistent access to a Chromebook allows teachers and students to engage in new and exciting learning opportunities.

Secondary campus personnel will communicate with parents and students regarding topics like the checkout process and care of the Chromebook. Student and parent questions will be addressed at Meet the Teacher Nights, Open Houses, Schedule Pick-Up Events and more.

International Baccalaureate Students Give Through Service and Action

International Baccalaureate students give through service and action at Barbara Bush Middle School.  Each spring, IB students at Bush participate in a school wide charity project. Students raise funds and collect items for local charities as part of service in action. In years past, our students have helped Operation Kindness, The Children’s Cancer Fund, and Learning for Limbs. For 2018, Bush IB students are supporting the GenesisWomen’s Shelter with donations of toiletries, household goods, and gently used clothing. One 8th grade class (pictured) donated the most items over the course of 6 weeks. IB Coordinator, Tina Flatt, said of the effort, “We thank all IB students who brought donations for this most worthy organization.”

Remembering Former First Lady Barbara Bush

Remembering Former First Lady

Former school board member, John Tepper, watches as former First Lady, Barbara Bush, signs autographs in the Barbara Bush Middle School Library.

CFBISD is remembering former First Lady, Barbara Bush. As her friends, family, and people across the nation grieve the loss of the former First Lady, her visit to CFB brings her loss closer to home. With a lifelong dedication to education and literacy, Mrs. Bush was an obvious choice for the naming of the district’s newest middle school in 1998. On Nov. 16, 1998, Mrs. Bush visited the campus, and spoke to students and staff. The first lady was treated to a tour of the campus named in her honor.

In recalling the visit, CFB employee, John Karstetter, stated, “she graciously shook hands with every child and adult to extended a hand to her. She toured the school with great enthusiasm. I remember her encouraging students that they could be whatever they wanted to be, but needed to ‘start now, to begin this incredible journey of life.'”

Former school board member, Lynn Chaffin, also remembers the visit fondly. She stated, “Mrs. Bush was such a lovely and engaging lady. She was warm and funny and so very easy to talk to. Her family stories made these very public people seem real and human and approachable which was very motivational for the students.”
