Publishing Party at Farmers Branch Elementary

Publishing Party at Farmers Branch Elementary

Ms. Campos’ 3rd grade class hosts a “Publishing Party” at Farmers Branch Elementary. The students have 4 weeks to prepare their presentations for the event. Students select a topic they are passionate about and research what non-profit organizations are doing in support of this effort. While they hone their writing skills, students prepare persuasive messages to read in front of an audience. As students learn that their teacher is not the only audience for their writing, volunteers visited the class to be an audience for the readings. Volunteers included mentors and City of Farmers Branch Mayor, Robert Dye.

As the volunteers sat in different areas of the classroom, students rotated in groups to read their written pieces to them. Additionally, volunteers gave verbal feedback and wrote personal notes to students as mementos from the event.

To promote two healthy habits this school year; eating well and reading often, Student Nutrition gives away a book each month in the elementary cafeterias. A student in each grade wins a book when the promotion comes to their school. Winners receive a certificate stating that they won the featured book. For Mar. 26, the book being featured is Little Hen Makes a Pizza. This month, we highlight students from La Villita Elementary School. Students Gudipudi Sandilya, David Perez, Anahi Arriaga, Azari Garcia, Iorid Arzola, and Hector Duran Chirinos are the La Villtia winners for March.

RLT Cosmetology Runs Full Service Salon

RLT Cosmetology Runs Full Service Salon

Before and After shots of teacher receiving a new hair style at RLT Cosmetology

RLT Cosmetology runs full service salon on Thursday evenings, 3:35 p.m. – 6 p.m. Students in the R. L. Turner High School cosmetology program recently worked on a before and after project. Students had to enlist volunteer teachers who were willing to try out a new look. Students would then consult and recommend a new style that would be flattering to the client, while meeting the client’s wishes. Students had to make an appointment with their teacher/client to give them their new look. The project helps to shape proper expectations as students prepare to enter the cosmetology field. This is keeping in step with CFBISD’s goal for career readiness. Students are able to add photos of the before and after styles to their portfolios. Several students in the program are slated to take the written exam in April, so they may obtain their state licenses.
