Educational Foundation Awards Grants to Two CFB Teachers
Established in 1997, the CFBISD Educational Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports CFBISD campuses, teachers, and students with dollars not otherwise available through State and Federal funding. The Foundation has awarded grants to two CFB teachers.
McCoy Elementary teacher, Nicole Bonilla, was awarded 2 grants for her project to get secondary materials and tools for students with autism and social and attention differences. She was awarded $1000 from the Kacie Brekhus Memorial Teacher Grant, and $1000 from the Frank Shor Impact Now! Fund. The Kacie Brekhus Memorial Grant is awarded each year to a CFB teacher who has a vision and plan to best support education opportunities for their students. Kacie Brekhus was a CFB Student from K-12th. Kacie tragically passed away in automobile accident in her Freshman year at the University of Texas. There is a race held every year in her honor, which supports the CFBISD Special Olympics team. The 2019 race will be held on March 2.
The Frank Shor Impact Now! Fund is to provide financial/program assistance to students/program through the Impact Now! program. To be eligible for consideration students must display promise and need in one of the following Impact areas: Fine Arts, Science & Technology, Athletics, Workforce Readiness, Leadership Development, Special Education, and Student Support. These funds are intended to improve supported students educational opportunities.
Blalack Middle School theatre teacher, Margaret Marrs, was awarded $1000 through the Valwood Improvement Authority Teacher Grant Fund. This grant is a general teacher grant fund open to all CFB teachers. The award is given for innovative programs that enrich students’ educational path. Ms. Marrs will be using the funds for the theatre’s “Harry Potter and the Theatre Design Project,” in which students will collaborate and create theatrical designs based on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child book/script for an area of technical theatre which includes scenery, costumes, and publicity.

Altos
Ali Jones – 1st chair
Hailey Lennon – 4th chair
Tenor
Zach Douglas – 4th chair

These students, led by Choir Director, Laura J. Roberts, now advance to the area audition to be held in January, 2019. If they are selected from the area auditions, they will have the opportunity to perform with the All-State Choir in San Antonio in February. Only 32 students were chosen to advance from Region 5 – seven of which are from RHS. More students from Ranchview are going to the Area audition than any of the other ten schools that participated in our region.
Ranchview Orchestra All-Region Results
On Saturday, despite driving rain, flooding streets, and the standard crippling fear that goes along with auditioning, we had ten brave students from the Ranchview Orchestra audition for membership into the TMEA Region 31 All-Region High School Symphony Orchestra. Orchestra all-region is always a very tough event as we are competing with our 4A classification against 5A and 6A schools.
Of the ten who auditioned, we placed six into the group! Please congratulate the following Ranchview orchestra members on a job well done:
Jaime Grider, string bass, 1st alternate
Albert Yang, string bass, 6th chair
Nathan Kong, violin 28th chair
Jaeni Loh, violin 23rd chair
Joseph Choi, violin 17th chair
Esther Peng, violin 3rd chair!
In addition to making All-Region, Joseph Choi and Esther Peng also qualified for the Area round of competition, meaning they have been approved to audition for the All-State level! We wish them well as they prepare for the next audition round in two weeks.
The all-region participants will get to enjoy a great musical experience playing professional level music at the Region 31 All-Region Clinic and Concert weekend in December. Once again, please congratulate these students with a “bravo!” on their hours of preparation, nerves of steel, and their great job representing our orchestra, school, and community! We are VERY proud of them!
Rosemeade Fifth Graders Learn Guitar
Rosemeade fifth-grade students in Mr. Farr’s music class learn how to play the E minor chord, and more, with the guitar. Mr. Farr uses a combination of modeling, student demonstrations, and analogies in his lessons. The students attentively listen and eagerly practice. Known for his patient demeanor, Mr. Farr works to make each student feel successful as they play their first chords, and full songs.
