Ranchview Teacher Receives District-Level VFW Teacher of the Year Award

Ranchview Teacher Receives District-Level VFW Teacher of the Year Award

Ranchview Teacher Receives District-Level VFW Teacher of the Year Award

Ranchview High School teacher, Leslie Grisham, has been selected and given the award for the local VFW award on March 1, 2017.  Her nomination then went to the district level, which she was awarded on May 10, 2017.  She’s now in the running at the state level!

The VFW Teacher of the Year award contest recognizes three exceptional teachers for their outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism to their students. Each year, a classroom elementary, junior high and high school teacher whose curriculum focuses on citizenship education topics — for at least half of the school day in a classroom environment — can be nominated for the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. Winners receive:

  • A $1,000 award for professional development expenses.
  • A $1,000 award for his/her school.
  • Two award plaques: one for the teacher, the other for his/her school.
  • An all-expenses-paid trip to attend a VFW conference to receive their award.

Congratulations and good luck in moving onto the state level, Leslie!

IB International Night at Barbara Bush Middle School

The fourth annual International Baccalaureate (IB) International Night was held at Barbara Bush Middle School on Wednesday, April 12th.  All four of CFB’s IB World Schools participated in this evening of learning about our diverse cultures.

ESL students and their parents from Barbara Bush hosted a station about their country and shared small bites of native foods.  The Primary Years Programme teachers from Las Colinas Elementary helped students to make maracas, while the Good Elementary brought Chinese yoyos to play with and Folklorico dancers to perform.  The IB Diploma Candidates from Ranchview High School helped children learn some Spanish and French , while the choirs from Las Colinas, Barbara Bush and Ranchview all sang together on a special piece of music.

We appreciate all of these groups, in addition to the orchestra students and theater students, for supporting this night of community sharing and learning.

Ranchview & Creekview Students Make their Mark on Poetry Slam Festival

On Saturday, April 8th, students from Ranchview & Creekview High School represented CFBISD in the “Louder Than a Bomb” Semi-finals.  This event took place at the Latino Cultural Center in Downtown Dallas.

Louder than a Bomb (LTAB) is a high school poetry slam festival and writing program.  LTAB is a 16 week writing program with 3 levels of involvement tailored to fit each campus. The workshops combine old school craft techniques with new school poetics. The students are challenged to study craft through critical examination of literary greats, modern leaders in the genre, and through examination of the lyrics of hip-hop.

Creekview will be moving on to the finals to compete against 4 other schools for the title of LTAB Slam Poetry Champions.  Ranchview is a finalist for the Chuck D Lyricist Activist Award.

Congratulations to all the students that participated & good luck in the finals!
