Perry Middle School Students Compete at Botball Regional Competition

Perry Robotics Team Awards from Botball Competition

On Saturday, March 9th the DeWitt Perry Middle School Robotics Club traveled to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to compete in the multi-state Oklahoma Botball regional competition against 55 other teams, mostly high schools.  Botball is a challenging autonomous robotics competition for middle through high school students.  There are no division lines and the Perry Middle School students competed against mostly high schools.  The students had 9 weeks to design, build, program and test up to two 100% autonomous robots to compete head to head in a non-violent robotics competition.  The students programmed their robots in C and Python, professional computer programming languages used every day in the engineering world.   The students must also prepare a presentation to perform in front of a pair of professional engineers.  The DeWitt Perry Middle School Robotics Club was formed 18 years ago and is one of the longest lived and most successful robotics clubs in the country.

After a grueling day of competition and presentations the club did very well, taking away the following awards:

Judges Choice – Best programming.

Judges Choice – Outstanding outreach

1st place – Documentation

1st place – Alliance competition

2nd place – Alliance competition

3rd place – Seeding

3rd place overall

The club sent almost 55 students to the competition, more than any other school at the competition.  The club wouldn’t be able to serve the number of students that it does without the generous support of the CFBISD Advanced Academic Services department, the CFB Association of the Gifted and Talented and the wonderful staff and administration of Perry Middle School.

LEAP 6th Grader From Perry Publishes Second Book

After His Debut Success, Arnav Returns With a Second Book

CFBISD is proud to share the news that our LEAP 6th grader Perry Middle School Student, Arnav Koppala, released his second book (Breaking Boundaries -The Pentagon Springs Series) as a published author. He is the youngest author of a sci-fi series.  Koppala started writing short novels and books at the age of seven. Pentagon Springs was inspired by his love for magic and science.

It is available on Amazon, Barnes and Nobles and most other book sites.

Arnav decided to donate a portion of his remuneration/royalties from this book to Save a Child’s Heart Foundation.

Perry Teacher Wins WFAA's Eco Educator of the Year

Perry Teacher Wins WFAA’s Eco Educator of the Year

Perry Middle School teacher, Dan Kinkade, has won WFAA’s Eco Educator of the Year!  A crew from WFAA surprised him with a $1000 check.  He will be featured on WFAA News (12:00 & 4:00 broadcasts) tomorrow, May 28th, as well as on their website.

Dan won based off his project for Perry Growers Gardening & Nature Club.  Perry Growers’ goal is to provide stimulating learning opportunities for middle school students.  The Program features many diverse projects:  the creation of a butterfly garden, a compost clinic, recycling program, trash pickup, planted plants that provide native habitat for bees and butterflies.  An on-going project is campus beautification.  Students recently planted 100 bulbs, and native wild flowers.  Students also created habitats for song birds.  Perry Growers focuses on conservation, and growth–both on the campus and as individuals.

Perry Growers is an on-going program specifically designed to introduce students to varied outdoor learning activities.  Students from our suburban area learn that they can make a positive impact in our school, our neighborhood and our world.

The Perry Robotics Club traveled to Norman, Oklahoma this past weekend (March 25th) to compete in the multi-state Oklahoma Botball regional competition. Botball is an extremely challenging autonomous robotics competition for middle school and high school students. There are no division lines and middle school students must compete directly against high school students. The students have nearly 2 1/2 months to design, build, program, document and test up to two robots to compete in a very challenging competition. The robots the students build are 100% autonomous (no remote control) and are programmed by the students in a real-world programming language called "C". The competition is divided into three parts: seeding rounds, double elimination and a documentation and oral presentation. These scores are combined to get a team's overall score. DeWitt Perry sent 4 teams including a team composed exclusively of Perry alumni from Turner and Creekview called "Perry 2.0". When the dust settled, of the top 5 teams (out of 48), 3 were from CFBISD

The kids have worked for nearly three months after school, every weekend and gave up their Spring break to come in and work on world dominating robots. The club would like to thank the CFB Association for the Gifted and Talented, Kathryn Schaeffer who is the executive director of CFBISD Advanced Academic Services and Mrs. Asheley Brown the principal of DeWitt Perry Middle School for their support of our organization.
