AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and persist in four-year colleges and universities. AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID is a program designed for acceleration, NOT remediation.
AVID is an elective class offered to students that meet the criteria for placement in the AVID program. A candidate for the AVID classroom is a student with college potential with support, a mid-range GPA and is the first in their family to pursue a college education. The AVID program provides college tutors for in class group tutorials, a student leadership program, guest speakers and field trips to visit area colleges throughout the year. Students should contact their counselor or the AVID Coordinator, Coach Gillis (SE151) if they are interested in being considered for placement in the AVID program.
