The Honor Roll recognizes public schools for demonstrating consistently higher levels of student academic achievement, improvement over time, and reduction in achievement gaps among ethnic minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged students. Honor Roll is the only school recognition program in the state using only student achievement outcomes as the criteria. Good Elementary Teacher is Texas Finalist for 2018 PAEMST

Good Elementary teacher, Ellaree Lehman, is a Texas finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program. PAEMST is the highest award for kindergarten through 12th-grade mathematics and science (including computer science) teachers can receive from the U.S. government. Nominees complete a rigorous application process that requires them to demonstrate their excellence in content knowledge and ability to adapt to a broad range of learners and teaching environments. Established by Congress in 1983, the President may recognize up to 108 exemplary teachers each year.

A panel of distinguished mathematicians, scientists, and educators at the state and national levels assess the applications before recommending nominees to OSTP. Teachers are selected based on their distinction in the classroom and dedication to improving STEM education.

Recipients of the award receive the following:

  • A certificate signed by the President of the United States.
  • A paid trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities.
  • A $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.
  • An opportunity to build lasting partnerships with colleagues across the nation.

Ms. Lehman is one of three finalists from Texas. The final winner will be announced in January 2019, after national judging.

Creating Challenges at SAGE 5-7

Students identified as Gifted and Talented have the option to attend SAGE at Perry Middle School during the summer. Students in grades 5-7 in SAGE 5-7 class are collaborating to make a Rube Goldberg machine. Rube Goldberg, was a cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer, and inventor. Goldberg is best known for a series of popular cartoons depicting complicated gadgets that perform simple tasks in indirect, convoluted ways, giving rise to the term “Rube Goldberg machines” for any similar gadget or process. Using cardboard, plastic cups, tape, wood, pulleys, and other objects, students in SAGE 5-7 are building their own version of a Rube Goldberg machine they plan on presenting to the open house on June 29. This is just one of many projects these students engage in as they solidify their understanding of more complex topics for their age-group. SAGE classes will continue through June 29.
