Welcome, Mr. Robinson, to Bea Salazar Learning Center! This year we are excited to introduce William Robinson who came to us from Anne Frank Elementary and Uplift Heights Prep. Mr. Robinson is passionate about students’ success, and chooses a career in education so that he can make an impact on people’s lives. Mr. Robinson graduated from Bethune-Cookam University, and finds his greatest inspiration in God. Bea Salazar hopes to help Mr. Robinson achieve his goal of helping students discover their gifts and purpose in life as well as assisting them in setting and achieving goals that will prepare them for college and beyond. Thank you Mr. Robinson for joining our team!
Mr. Luse – Teacher of First 9 Weeks at Bea Salazar Learning Center
Congratulations to Doug Luse for being Bea Salazar’s Teacher of the First 9 Weeks and nominee for Teacher of the Year. Doug Luse was selected for this honor by his colleagues. Thompson Students Participate in Lego Activity
Ms. Gray’s 3rd grade language arts class used teamwork and communication to build a Lego kit. Each student was given a specific role, which they rotated.
Students did such a great job cooperating, they were given 15 minutes to complete the structure without roles. It was so great to see the communicating transfer when the roles were removed!
CATCH at Thompson Elementary
2nd grade students enjoy a rigorous game of soccer during CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) time at recess on August 23, 2018. By uniting multiple players in a child’s life to create a community of health, CATCH is proven to prevent childhood obesity and supported by 25 years and 120 academic papers indicating as much as 11% decrease in overweight and obesity.
During this structured part of their recess students learn about healthy choices, how to collaborate as a team and be respectful to each other.
Thompson Students Review Familiar Concepts
4th grade students in Ms. Remington’s class spent part of their afternoon reviewing concepts from 3rd grade, such as graphing and quadrilaterals while learning how the daily math workshop time will run for the current school year.
During this time of the day, students will work independently and with partners on various games and activities while Ms. Remington works with small groups of students. By reviewing familiar concepts during the first days of school, students are able to focus on working cooperatively and classroom expectations.
Thompson Students Join the Cougar News Network
The 2018-2019 Cougar News Network, is off to a great start! We have 9 eager 4th and 5th graders leading our daily live announcements sharing the weather, lunch, birthdays, and must know news items for the students at Thompson Elementary.
The students (who applied with teacher recommendation last year) had to agree to be a leader for our school, write a catchy announcement to keep the student population attention, and arrive early to be ready to go live at 7:35 A.M.. They are busy learning how to write scripts, work the camera, and will soon add the power of a green screen to their list of tricks!
Applications for the 2019-2020 news crew will be available to 3rd and 4th graders at the beginning of May!
This is a great opportunity for Thompson students!
Thompson Students Explore Bilingual Texts
On August 31, 4th & 1st grade dual language learners at Thompson Elementary engaged in collaborative exploration of bilingual texts. The dual language program, which students enter in kindergarten, contains a combination of English native speakers and Spanish native speakers learning both languages.
Reading and Language arts are taught in Spanish and Math/Science classes are taught in English. At Thompson, buddy reading is a time in which primary and intermediate students pair up to share a love of reading. One student exclaimed, “I look forward to buddy reading every week so I can practice my reading voices!”
Field Students Are the Faces of Kickstart Kids
In early November of 2017, the students of the Vivian Field karate program were chosen to be the face of Kickstart Kids’ 25th Anniversary campaign. Helping to raise awareness of the program, foundation and it’s effect on the students it reaches.
Today, almost one year later, the photographers returned to the Vivian Field Middle School for another opportunity for our students. The North Texas Giving Day fund raiser for Kickstart Kids is fast approaching and, once again, we were chosen to to be the the face of the day, alongside the students of Perry Middle School and their instructor, Jessica Hellman.
Kickstart so graciously gifted us with a canvas print of our Vivian Field students from the 2017 photo shoot. There are only great things in store for our program and the fabulous kids of our own VivNation Kickstart program!
