Our Jazz Band over here at Dan F Long participated in the Pioneer Days Festival at Northside Baptist Church last Saturday, September 15th. In the audience was the Mayor of Carrollton Ken Falconer and a member of the CFB School Board John Mathews. Of course we got several pictures and we’d love to promote our school and jazz band on the CFB website and social media. Attached is one of the pictures, but we’ve got several more on our Facebook page (Dan F Long Middle School Band) and various parents cell phones.
The Creekview High School Mock Trial team competed at the Empire Mock Trial Tournament in Atlanta, GA. In 4 rounds, over the course of 2 days, students presented both the prosecution and defense sides in a criminal case. The case involved a confrontation between a white supremacist speaker at a public university and a counter-protester. Students also argued a pre-trial motion. The motion concerned whether, under the first amendment, the university could charge a disproportionate security fee to the speaker based upon a conclusion that his speech could incite violence.
Law Academy President Joanna Boyer, in her first-ever Mock Trial Tournament, earned a Top Attorney Award. Mock Trial Captain Jazmin Torres earned a Top Witness Award for her portrayal of crane operator Joey Amber. Amber was a former classmate of the defendant and eyewitness to the assault. Torres maintained a Boston accent for the duration of the tournament.
Coach: Brian Sheguit

Creekview High School Law Academy students Joanna Boyer and Makaylia Askew just returned from a whirlwind trip to New York City. The trip was their prize for winning the Harlan Institute/ConSource Virtual Supreme Court Competition last year. At the competition, one of the finals judges was current Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The students were able to attend a Constitution Day Celebration featuring a Q & A with Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and they went backstage to meet her in person.
Boyer and Askew then were honored and gave a speech at the ConSource/iCivics Constitution Day gala dinner. The dinner also honored Wells Fargo lead attorney and in-house counsel, C. Allen Parker. During the trip, the Law Academy students attended two Broadway shows and visited the World Trade Center memorial and Statue of Liberty. Law Academy Director, Jonathan Ray accompanied the students at the event and stated, “at all times, these students represented CFB, Creekview, and the Law Academy spectacularly!”

The International Day of Peace was celebrated at Las Colinas Elementary. Students were asked the question – “WHAT DOES PEACE MEAN TO YOU?” These second graders said, “No fighting, no racing or competition, cooperating with each other, show RESPECT, not look at each other’s color, be quiet and calm and it would be nice if the world would show LOVE to each other.” These thoughts of children are SO BEAUTIFUL! May we all learn from these students.
When parents and students drove into the Las Colinas Elementary parking loop early on Thursday morning, September 20, they were met with with enthusiastic students who were eager to help those in our local community who are in need!
Students held hand painted signs and cheered ever so loudly that no one could have not heard their message. It rang through the parking lot loud and clear. Thank you to these students and their parents who helped them have a voice in their community…a voice to not sit back and do nothing, but a voice to rise up and take action!
Kindergarteners and fourth graders use technology and communication skills to collaborate in Spanish. Fourth grade students showed their expertise while using technology as they patiently explained and taught the Kindergarteners how to use an app on the ipad and practice speaking in Spanish. Not only did the Kindergarteners have fun, but they also had an opportunity to get to know their fourth grade buddy at school.
Students in the Primary Years Programme at an IB campus learn what it is like to have an international mindset. The Learner Profile with the supporting attitudes is part of an IB education. Even in Physical Education class, students are taught about the character traits an IB student is expected to exhibit.
Third graders are being open-minded as they try new mathematical strategies. The process of solving real-life, authentic world problems requires critical thinking and an open mind. Their teacher is very enthusiastic today!
Fourth graders used their research skills to inquire into Hispanic Heritage Month. They created questions as they wondered about those whose roots came from hispanic culture. These who have gone before us had many challenges and opportunities. As students make connections to these leaders, students now understand how they can have “grit” as they endure challenges and stay committed when opportunities come. Students have had good discussions around responsibility and appreciation.
