Penny War at McCoy Elementary

From December 1 – 12, 2018, students at McCoy Elementary participated in a Penny War fundraiser.  The different grade levels competed to see who could raise the most money by collecting silver coins.  Pennies, however, had a negative value. Here, we see a Kindergartner dropping pennies into a First Grade piggy bank!  In the end, Fourth Grade raised more money than any other grade level, winning the Penny War. Fourth Graders enjoyed a cookie party on Friday December 12, 2018.  Ultimately, everyone was a winner because the total amount of money raised for the McCoy PTA was $1,905.39!

Hour of Code at McCoy Elementary

Hour of Code at McCoy Elementary

On December 12, 2018, Kindergartners at McCoy Elementary observed Hour of Code by doing an unplugged activity from Code.org in the library.  This activity is called “Move It, Move It.” In this activity, students are exposed to the concepts of a program, a programmer, and a programming language.

The students in Ms. Callahan’s class took turns being the programmer and the walking machine. In order for the “walking machine” to reach the square with the happy face, two things have to happen.  The programmer must communicate the program correctly to the machine and the machine must follow the program correctly. The programming language consisted of arm signals.

This year, Ms. Eaton, the librarian has planned a mixture of unplugged and online activities for Kindergarten and First Grade to experience Hour of Code.
