Turner Students Travel to Austin
Youth Leadership and Junior Chamber Ambassador students traveled to Austin through the sponsorship of the Farmers Branch Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation and Huckabee, Inc. Farmers Branch City Council member Ana Reyes helped coordinate the events of the day for the RLT students.
Students were able to tour the Texas State Capitol, the Lyndon B. Johnson Museum and the UT Austin campus.
Turner Orchestra Receives Prestigious Award
On April 14, 2016, the 5th annual Dallas Summer Musical High School Musical Awards ceremony was held at the Music Hall at Fair Park. The orchestra from R. L. Turner’s production of My Fair Lady was announced as winner in the best student orchestra category.
This is an amazing honor and recognition for R. L. Turner High School and CFBISD!

Turner Student Wins NEA Musical Theatre Songwriting Contest
Congratulations to R. L. Turner High School senior Chelsea Mayo for winning the Dallas round of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Musical Theatre Songwriting Contest. In its inaugural year, the Musical Theatre Songwriting Challenge began with local contests in Dallas, Seattle, and Minneapolis, leading to a final national contest held in New York City. Chelsea’s original composition, “Say Goodbye”, won the Dallas round, well representing R. L. Turner HS and CFBISD in a contest where the 2nd and 3rd place Dallas finalists included students from Highland Park HS and Booker T. Washington HS.
Chelsea will be awarded a $2,500.00 scholarship in addition to a fully funded trip to New York City to participate in a songwriting workshop with industry professionals leading up to the final national contest this summer. Chelsea’s musical pursuits while at R. L. Turner High School include serving as a violinist in the Symphonic Orchestra under the direction of Christy Myers, an alto in the A Cappella Choir under the direction of Brian Murray, and an AP Music Theory student.
Smith Girls’ Golf Team Advances to Regional Tournament
Congratulations to the Newman Smith Girls’ Golf Team for winning 2nd place at the 11-5A District Golf Tournament. The Team now advances to regioanls. This is the second consecutive year that the team has advanced to Regionals.
Newman Smith Teacher Named Fulbright-Hays Scholarship Winner
Congratulation to NSHS AP Government Teacher Amanda Ledwon for being named a Fulbright-Hays Scholar for 2016.
Ledwon received the prestigious scholarship recently and will participate in an extensive five week study assignment in Jordan later this summer.
The topic of the study assignment is “Through the Lens of Jordan: Integrating Middle Eastern Narratives into North Texas Social Studies Curriculum.”
She and nine other North Texas social studies teachers will visit historic Jordanian sites and conference/study with scholars from various countries in the Middle East this summer.
Newman Smith Teacher Selected for State Department Fellowship
Congratulations to NSHS Social Studies Teacher Angela Hardy for recently completing a prestigious U.S. State Department Fellowship in The Kingdom of Morocco.
The fellowship, part of the Teachers for Global Classroom program, selected Hardy to join a fifteen member cohort group of educators for two weeks of extensive fieldwork in Morocco in North Africa.
The fieldwork involved university seminars, meetings with educators from various countries, and teaching assignments at a school in Taroudant, Morocco.
Taroudant is a Moroccan city located in the southern part of the country.
The program was administered via the Washington, D.C. based educational non-profit International Research and Exchange Board and the U.S. State Department.
Hardy completed the program this past February.
