Newman Smith Wrestling @ Frisco Reedy

The wrestling Trojans traveled to Reedy on Thursday night to battle the Reedy Lions and the Birdville Hawks. Once again the Trojans wrestled with great pride. Although they were small in number, they fought with great enthusiasm. During the JV competition, the Trojans got pins from Marshall Masvikeni, Jamel Scott, and Lenyn Carvalho. The latter two in their first career matches.

The varsity competition heated up quickly when the Trojans took on the Hawks from Birdville. The final score of the dual was 35-24, but of the matches that were wrestled the Trojans had 3 pins to Birdville’s 2. Anthony Machorro, Luis Gonzalez-Rodriguez, and Christopher Conway each pinned their way to victory. The Trojans also received an exhibition match pin victory from Tyrese Lewis after he took the forfeit at 152. Before the dual with Birdville was over, the Trojan ladies got a chance to shine. Freshman Mackenzie Greer and junior Barbie Sanchez each recorded pins. After finishing against the Hawks, the Smith Trojans took on the Reedy Lions.

Reedy won the dual 69-11 as they filled every weight class and came away with eight forfeits totaling 48 points. The Trojans were able to rely on their steady seniors, Lewis and Conway, to keep from being shut out completely. Lewis won by a technical fall and Conway pinned his way to victory once again. In addition to their victories, senior girl Neriaha Wofford closed out Smith’s night with a pin of her own. This group of wrestlers continues to improve, and it should be exciting to see them pitted against some high level competition this weekend at Turner’s Paul Aubrey Holiday Tournament.

Smith High School – Wrestling Richardson Roundup

Smith High School Wrestling

Smith wrestling had a lot to be thankful for over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Before the Trojans broke for the week, they competed in the Richardson Roundup tournament at Richardson High School. All but one Trojan wrestler had a victory on the day, and several returned home with some shiny hardware. Three senior boys won first place medals with first period pins. Chris Conway and Jonathan Johnson won the 182 and 285 pound classes respectively, and Tyrese Lewis, wrestling in the 160 pound class, recorded the fastest pin in the final round when he defeated his opponent from Byron Nelson High School in a mere 15 seconds!

The JV Trojans made some news as well when newcomers Caleb Daley and Kendall Iwuagwu each took home silver medals in their first career tournaments. These two wrestlers have bright futures ahead of them.

The wrestlers enjoyed some time off, but they are gearing up for three consecutive tournament weekends. This weekend the squad will travel to South Grand Prairie High School for a two day tournament on Friday and Saturday, next week they will compete in the always tough Paul Aubrey Holiday Classic at RL Turner, and they close out the first semester at Wiley High School on December 17.

Newman Smith Wrestling vs. J.J. Pearce

Smith Wrestling started off the year with some positives. Although the Trojans did not win their season opening dual versus J.J. Pearce, they came away with three pins in the five varsity weight classes that wrestled. Seniors Tyrese Lewis, Chris Conway, and Jonathan Johnson all recorded pins in their first matches of the season. In addition to their successes, the program also saw nine wrestlers compete in their first career matches. Of those newcomers, several captured their first victories. Conway was the first to notch a W during the varsity, and he was followed by Kendall Iwuagwu, Josh Aranda, and freshman girl Mackenzie Greer all in JV action. In a solid start for a group of newcomers, the Smith wrestlers exemplified Trojan Pride.

The Smith wrestling squad is scheduled to go to Richardson High School this weekend for the Richardson Roundup.  This tournament will surely provide new challenges as this group builds for their district season that starts in January.
