Three CFB Students Are 2018 National Merit Scholarship WinnersThree CFB students are 2018 National Merit Scholarship winners. There are fewer than 4,000 of these scholarship winners across the country each year. The scholarships are financed by U.S. colleges and universities, through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the Finalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

Career pursuits in Engineering, Medicine, and Music

Smith High School student, Nathan Bennett, won the National Merit Texas A&M University Scholarship. Turner High School student, Rohini Kallianpur, won the National Merit University of Texas at Dallas Scholarship. Finally, Creekview High School student, Christopher Hawkins, won the National Merit University of Oklahoma Scholarship.

Newman Smith 2018 Senior Walk

The Trojans held their Newman Smith 2018 Senior Walk on May 24. The annual tradition highlights graduating seniors, recognizing those with perfect attendance and numerous scholarships. In 2018, Newman Smith High School seniors earned over $2 million in scholarships for college. Additionally, 2 students were recognized for signing up for the U.S. Air Force, while another student was recognized for enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. Former NSHS Principal, Joe Pouncy, who retired after 34 years in education, presented scholarships named in his honor to 2 graduating seniors. Ten students were also nominated for the Torchbearer award, recognizing students that persevere and excel in the face of extreme challenges.

SAT Preparation Classes

SAT Preparation ClassesYou can raise your SAT score by attending SAT Preparation Classes. Sharon Serrago’s SAT/PSAT Prep Program will be held at Newman Smith High School, 2335 N Josey Ln, Carrollton, TX 75006, at the North end of the building. The program is available only for CFBISD students.

May 12, 9:00 a.m. – noon.

Summer 2018 Dates (Monday-Friday)
June 25 – July 13
9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Fall Review and Practice Tests (5 Saturdays)
Sept. 8, 15, 22, 29, Oct. 6
9:00 a.m. – noon.

Program Goals

  • Presents students the best opportunity to prepare for these tests and to learn the content that is sure to be on the tests
  • Provides testing experience by completing 4 full testing scenarios.
  • Helps students achieve their best scores, whether it is to assure a place in the university of choice or to score high enough to qualify for scholarship awards.

Tuition: $200

Each student will receive The Official SAT Study Guide by the College Board and a set of study materials to help students with testing skills and content of the test.

  • Registration and tuition may be paid by credit card online at www.serragotestprep.com.

Newman Smith athletes sign with colleges for cheerleading, football, tennis, and soccer today. Lyndsey Rolen will play soccer for the University of Texas at Tyler. Honesty Lewis received a cheerleading scholarship for Langston University. Daniel Sanchez will play tennis for Quincy University. Josh Aranda will play football for Trinity Bible College. Cristian Gonzalez will play football for Howard Payne University.

Free College in Your Child’s Future?

Thanks to Dallas County Promise, there could be FREE college in your child's future.Thanks to Dallas County Promise, there could be FREE college in your child’s future. Students attending R. L. Turner High School, Newman Smith High School, and Early College High School  (begins this year for ECHS) in the fall of 2018 will be eligible for free college tuition toward a 2 or 4 year degree, regardless of income, thanks to Dallas County Promise. This partnership between the Dallas County Community College Foundation, the Dallas County Community College District, local school districts, and businesses and industry help to make this possible. Business partners are providing donations to the Dallas County Community College Foundation to fund the program. More information is explained in the video below.

CFB Athletes Advance to Regionals and Beyond

CFB Athletes Advance to Regionals & BeyondCFB athletes advance to Regionals and beyond. Over 23 athletes from Ranchview competef at the Area Track Meet last week in Decatur. Several relay teams and individual events are moving onto Regionals at Texas A&M Commerce this Friday and Saturday.

Seventeen Track athletes from Turner, Creekview, and Newman Smith competed in Frisco last week at the Area Track meet. The following athletes advancing to Regionals at UTA in Arlington Friday and Saturday.

Competing at Regionals are; Creekview’s Gabriel Willis, Area Champion in High Jump and Juan Ortiz, Area Champion in Discus. Also, from Creekview is Micah Walker in the 100m dash. Competing from Newman Smith, is Taylor James in the 400m Dash.

Newman Smith tennis player, Daniel Sanchez, advanced to Regionals in the singles division.

Ranchview freshman golfer, Bohyun Park, is currently competing today and tomorrow in her attempt to advance to State.

Senior Creekview Golfer, Kyle Cox just finished competing at Regionals yesterday with an impressive 3rd place finish out of 96 golfers which qualified him for a fourth trip back to the State Golf Tournament on May 14-15. The event will take place in Georgetown, at Whitewing Golf Course.

2018 NSHS Senior Honors Breakfast

2018 NSHS Senior Honors BreakfastNewman Smith High School hosts 2018 NSHS Senior Honors Breakfast. Teachers, staff, and parents celebrated the top 10% of the graduating class during the annual event. Prior to recognizing the students for their academic performance, students and their family were guests at a breakfast in their honor. Three out of the top 10 students, including the Valedictorian, were unable to attend the ceremony due to being on a band field trip to Florida. In their stead, the students’ parents received their cords and medals on their behalf.
