Carrollton Mayor, Kevin Falconer, visited McCoy Elementary Kindergarten students on Oct. 10. The mayor explained his role and how he and the city government serve the citizens of Carrollton. Students asked several questions about his workday, how he was elected, and if he gets paid to be mayor. Students were also excited to learn that the mayor’s daughter is a 3rd-grade teacher at McCoy.

Reading Time at McCoy
On September 21, 2018, Kindergarten LEAP students at McCoy Elementary School enjoyed some independent reading time. Ms. Callahan said that her students have found several comfy places in the classroom where they can get lost in books. Ms. Callahan’s students love to read!
Writers’ Workshop at McCoy
September 21, 2018, First Grade LEAP students at McCoy Elementary were engaged in Writers’ Workshop. Students learned how to write focused personal narratives called “Small Moment” writing. They elaborated their stories by including dialogue, action, and character development. Mrs. Green said, “We grow great writers at McCoy!”
Addition Game
On September 19, 2018, First Grade LEAP students played an addition game: “Collect $2.00.” This game increases computational fluency and provides addition practice that children enjoy. Students can transfer these skills by counting and totaling the money in their piggy bank at home!
Students Vote for Student Council
Fourth Grade Students at McCoy Elementary School voted for Student Council representatives. Students voted for a class rep as well as for campus officers. McCoy Cowboys participate in the democratic process!
McCoy Students Expand Their Multiplication Skills
On September 13, 2018, Fourth Grade students at McCoy Elementary School made multiple towers. This activity teaches students the multiples of a number. Mrs. Aznavour makes math come alive with hands on activities for her students!
Building Terrariums at McCoy
On September 21, 2018, Fifth Grade students at McCoy Elementary School built terrariums.
The students are learning about ecosystems and the water cycle by watching their terrariums grow.
Lightsaber Rhythms
On September 19, 2018, Second Grade students at McCoy Elementary School chanted different rhythms in music. The force is definitely strong with this group as they chant different rhythms with their lightsabers. Mrs. Parker said, “Second grade music is out of this world!”
McCoy Students Practice Math Skills
Mathematical thinking is always at home at McCoy Elementary School! On September 12, Mr. Powell’s Second Grade Mathematicians added strings of numbers together to increase their number fluency. They can solve problems easier than using a calculator!
Reflections Art Contest
Students at McCoy Elementary School are super artists! That’s why so many McCoy Cowboys enter the Reflections art contest every year. This year the theme is “Heroes Around Me”. Students may create entries illustrating that theme in any of these categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, or visual arts. Entries are due to art teacher Ms. Wheatley by October 12, 2018.
