Furneaux Students Have Lunch With Officer Palmer
Officer Palmer, the School Resource Officer (SRO) for Furneaux Elementary visited with the PreKindergarten students at breakfast on Aug. 31. Pre-Kindergarten students are learning about the important people and their roles at Furneaux. Students learn that Officer Palmer is there for them when they need help. Whether his help is manifested as a listening ear, a hearty high five, or a big hug; Officer Palmer is there for students at Furneaux.
Furneaux Elementary has an open invitation to all first responders for a free lunch every day for the 2018-2019 school year. First responders can visit any CFBISD school cafeteria and receive a free lunch so that they may visit with students.
Furneaux thanks area first responders for keeping the CFB community safe, and encourages them to visit as often as possible.

Furneaux Students Learn Depth and Complexity
Students at Furneaux Elementary are using specialized language when they come home from school as they learn the elements of depth and complexity. There are icons associated with the different elements of depth and complexity that serve as visual prompts for students. These visual prompts are designed to help students go beyond a surface-level understanding of a concept and enhance their ability to think critically. These critical thinking tools help students dig deeper into a concept (depth) and understand that concept with greater complexity.
For a student to truly understand a topic of study, they must speak the language specific to that topic. Through the different elements of depth and complexity, students study the language of the discipline, details, patterns, rules, big ideas, ethical issues, and trends of a topic. They are able to find unanswered questions, view multiple perspectives, look how things/ideas change over time, and how things/ideas are connected through different disciplines.
In lieu of “learning to read,” these Furneaux students are “reading to learn.”
Furneaux Fun Fridays
On the last Friday of the month, Furneaux enjoys Fun Friday. Students and staff come together to celebrate all the great things going on at Furneaux over the previous month. During August’s Fun Friday, Ms. Hopkins and Ms. Brosseau’s 4th-grade students sang a rap song about school.
Furneaux 1st Graders Enhance Reading With Whisper Phones
Furneaux first-grade students are learning to enhance their reading skills by using “whisper phones.” A whisper phone is a small, light-weight auditory feedback device, sometimes homemade by teachers out of PVC pipe. The whisper phones allow a student to speak softly into it while listening to the clarity and rhythm of their words as they read. This instant feedback encourages the student to make any necessary adjustments to their fluency or pronunciation as they speak.

Elks Grant Heart Challenge Course to Furneaux
Furneaux Elementary was the first of twenty-six (26) elementary schools to begin teaching The Heart Challenge Course to its students. Carrollton-Farmers Branch Elementary Physical Education Department was the recipient of a $4,000Â grant from the Irving Elks Lodge during the 2017-2018 school year. The Irving Elks combined a $2500 Gratitude Grant and a $1500 Anniversary Grant in order to purchase this equipment for CFB Elementary PE classes for use during the school year. The obstacle course that represents the four chambers of the heart and teaches students how blood circulates through the body will rotate among all elementary schools beginning in the fall of 2018.
CFB Retired School Personnel Donate Books to Campuses
The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Retired School Personnel Association participates in the Texas Retired Teachers Association’s annual Children’s Book Project. The A Book a Child program encourages literacy, reading, and book ownership by providing a new book for each child to keep, read, and share. Books are chosen to be grade-level appropriate and also meet the needs of special students. This year, CFBRSPA will deliver 2,710 books to students at Carrollton, Central, Davis, Furneaux, and Good elementary schools.
