Smith High School Presents “Little Shop of Horrors”

Smith High School theater will present the musical, Little Shop of Horrors, Jan. 26-27. Based on the 1960’s film, Little Shop of Horrors, the musical tells the story of the meek floral assistant, Seymour Krelborn. Seymour stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II.”  Taking the moniker from his workplace crush, this R&B-singing, blood-eating plant promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Seymour. As long as he keeps feeding Audrey II what it wants, that is. Through unfortunate events, Seymour soon discovers Audrey II’s out of this world origins and alarming intent of global domination!

CHS Law Academy Student Heads to Competition

CHS Law Academy Student Heads to CompetitionCreekview High School Law Academy student heads to competition on Jan. 20. The Law & Criminal Justice Academy resides at Creekview High School. Simon Peña spoke before the local chapter of the American Legion in December. As a result, they have selected him to represent CFBISD in competition. Additionally, Peña is preparing for; three different Moot Court cases, YMCA State competition, the Harlan Institute’s Virtual Supreme Court competition, and the Duke University Invitational Moot Court tournament.

Previously this school year, Peña was named Top Attorney at the Princeton University Moot Court competition and at the YMCA Districts competition. Peña continues to prepare for several competitions before Spring Break.

CHS Artists Selected for 2018 Young Masters Exhibit

CHS Artists Selected for 2018 Young Masters ExhibitFive artists from Creekview High School have had their artwork selected for the 2018 Young Masters Exhibit. The exhibit is hosted by the Dallas Museum of Art, the O’Donnell Foundation, and AP Strategies. This is the 24th year for the annual exhibit. The 2018 show will include 54 studio art works: 40 drawing/2D works; 14 3D works, 4 art history essays, and 6 music theory compositions.

While some highly quality work is not in the final selection, this is for specific reasons. This is done in an attempt to provide the public with a better understanding of the broad range of approaches in the three College Board AP portfolios. The judges began with over 560 digital submissions, and the 126 works selected for the preliminary round deserve special recognition for their confident articulation of form and ideas.

RLT Lionettes Perform as 9 Ladies Dancing

RLT Lionettes Take 9 Ladies Dancing to the CFBISD Administration Building

9 Ladies DancingBringing holiday cheer to the CFBISD Administration building, the RLT Lionettes performed as “9 Ladies Dancing.” While holiday music played in the background, the Lionettes danced in line in the Administration board room. Employees from the building were invited to the brief performance. Nine Lionettes from R. L. Turner were selected based on their high academic performance.  While they practice their routines, the Lionettes remain focused on their schoolwork as well. These top academic performers include the senior class valedictorian and the sophomore class valedictorian.

Middle School Students Compete in 2017 UIL One Act Play Competition

On Dec. 1, all CFB middle schools participated in the 2017 UIL One Act Play competition. The topics of the plays included such subjects as Peter Pan, The Holocaust, and the downside of conformity. First place play went to Perry Middle School for The Frogs, second place play went to Barbara Bush Middle School for This is a Test, while third place play went to Polk Middle School for I Never Saw Another Butterfly.  The competition was conducted by the R. L. Turner Theater Department.

Turner Theatre Students Head to National Competition

Turner Theatre Students Head to National CompetitionThanks to their success at the Texas Thespian Festival, Turner theatre students head to National Competition. Students at R. L. Turner High School competed at the statewide event held at the Gaylord Texan Nov. 15-18. The Texas Thespians Chapter is an affiliate of the International Thespian Society, an educational theatre honor society. Their goal is to promote excellence in middle school and high school theatre departments across Texas. The Nationals will take place at the University of Nebraska in June, 2018.

Barbara Bush Honor Winds Band Participate in All-Region Band Auditions

Members of the Barbara Bush Honor Winds band traveled to Aubrey Middle School to participate in the All-Region Middle School Band auditions.  Students from twenty-two different schools competed for placement in the Region 2 MS All-Region Band.

Our students did an excellent job and represented our school well.  We had eighteen students selected to participate in the All-Region band and we had four students selected as an alternate in their section. Congratulations to these outstanding young musicians!

RHS Student Wins IB Art Portfolio Scholarship

RHS Student Wins IB Art Portfolio ScholarshipWhile fellow Wolves participate in local Art Show and Exhibit, RHS Student Wins IB Art Portfolio Scholarship. Eight Ranchview High School students participated in the Farmers Branch Carrollton Art Association Scholarship Show and Exhibit on Nov. 4. Brittany Given won $100 for “Best of Show” for her large scale multimedia piece.

Additionally, there is a separate senior scholarship show which is solely for students that will pursue art in college and beyond.  Karen Ki for won a $1,500 scholarship for her IB Art portfolio.  RHS art instructor, Caroline Kinlaw stated, “Karen is a beautiful mixture of academics and fine arts.”

Artwork from the event  will be on display at the Farmers Branch Manske Library throughout the month of November.
