McCoy Students Perform 3 Piggy Opera

Kindergarten students at McCoy Elementary perform 3 Piggy Opera. The musical event is based on the children’s story, “The Three Little Pigs.” Students in grades 1-5 watched the performance, as well as parents. A former McCoy student, Luís Hernandez, who will be graduating from Newman Smith High School this year, also spoke to students to encourage to listen to study tips they get from their teachers. Hernandez was the 2018 Scholarship Recipient of $1000 from the McCoy PTA. Additionally, students held a flash mob in honor of two teachers who are retiring this year. Midge Hunley worked for 5 years at Furneaux Elementary and for 9 years at McCoy – a total of 14 years for CFB. Tammy Hatcher is retiring after working 38 years at McCoy.

Syrian Refugee Portrait Project at RHS

Syrian Refugee Portrait Project at RHS

Advanced artists at Ranchview High School participated in a Syrian refugee portrait project called The Memory Project. The Memory Project is a non-profit effort by UNICEF. The project allows students to create and donate portraits to youth around the world that face substantial challenges. RHS artists were assigned images of Syrian refugee students. These portraits are hand-delivered to the refugee camps. Art teacher, Caroline Kinlaw, states, “the portraits give the recipients something tangible, showing that someone on the other side of the world cares about them. These advanced artists are working to build a kinder world, one portrait at a time.”

The competition is the visual arts counterpart to UIL competition in Texas. The competition is overseen by the Texas Art Education Association.

On Feb. 24, 21 RLT artists competed at the regional level. Consequently, Brown is one of 60 students to qualify for the state contest. Brown will represent Turner High School when her work will be judged against other top state competitors in April.
