Farmers Branch Elementary students along with help from generous volunteers from the R. L. Turner football team participated in Jump Rope for Heart. Jump Rope for Heart is a fundraising and physical activity program based around skipping. It teaches school-aged children how to keep fit and healthy, all while having fun and raising vital funds for heart disease research and education.
Country Place Elementary Destination Imagination team placed 1st in Regionals for the second year in a row! They are headed to the state competition in Lubbock on April 7th & 8th. Destination Imagination is open to all kindergarten through university level students worldwide. Students form teams of up to 7 members, select their preferred Challenge and work together to develop a solution to the Challenge. The Challenges are open-ended and enable students to learn and experience the creative process while fostering their creativity, curiosity and courage. The Country Place Team Manager is a 5th grade parent Abbie Sherman. Congratulations & good luck at the state tournament in April!

3 Newman Smith Students are being accepted into the Texas Visual Arts Association 2017 High School Art Competition. The TVAA High School Art Competition is open to all 10th, 11th and 12th grade high school students who reside in the State of Texas. These students were chosen out of thousands of artworks.

The Trojan wrestling season came to a close on Friday, February 24. Christopher Conway traveled to Houston to compete in the UIL State Wrestling Tournament at the 170 pound weight class. Chris represented the school and program well at the state meet. He was the first state qualifier for the Trojans since 2015. Chris’ run to the state meet was exceptionally impressive considering it was his first year officially competing in the sport. Conway is a senior and hopes to continue wrestling after he graduates this summer. Congratulations on all of your achievements, Chris!

Lennox Engineering Visits Central Elementary
Eighteen Lennox engineers from a wide-variety of backgrounds came to Central Elementary on February 23 to explore with 4th graders the joys of engineering. Their visit corresponded with Engineers’ Week.
According to The National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineer Week is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers.
What Does an Engineer Do?
The engineers who visited Central Elementary had careers ranging from electrical engineers to mechanical engineers. Students were really excited to find out they were even engineers whose sole job was to break things. These engineers break and test items in extreme conditions to ensure the product was suited for a variety of environments.
Real World Skills in Engineering
After speaking about their jobs as engineers, the professionals led students through a lesson on bridge design. Students, alongside engineers, developed plans and built bridges like a real engineer. They later tested their designs for strength. The students became real engineers.
The Day was a Success at Central Elementary
Both the Central students and engineers felt as if they had a great deal of learning during the day’s events. Central Elementary 4th graders left with a greater knowledge of the world of engineering. The students were excited that they could choose engineering as a possible career path. The day gave students new skills in engineering, and they all walked away with a smile on their face.

Congratulations to Sarah Clarke for a strong finish at STATE swim meet this past weekend. At preliminaries on Friday, February 17, the importance was making the top 8 for Saturday. She qualified with a best time of her career and was ranked 7th in the 100 butterfly. On Saturday, she finished her high school career finishing as the 6th fastest flyer in the State 5A competition. Congratulations to her and representing Smith with pride!
The Trojan wrestlers had a pretty good start to the regional tournament. During day one on Friday, all three boys that entered the tournament won at least one match. Both Tyrese Lewis and Chris Conway won two matches and returned for day 2.
On the second day of competition, Lewis’ tournament ended with a 6th place finish. He ended his season as a regional placer with a 25-9 overall record.
Conway’s path was an odyssey worthy of a Trojan hero. He won his first match of the date then was narrowly defeated in his second. That loss sent him to the 5th place match, which he won. That victory allowed him to challenge for the fourth place wrestler for a berth to the state wrestling finals. In his final battle of the weekend, Chris Conway avenged two previous losses against a competitor from Creekview and will be the Trojans’ lone qualifier for state in his first competitive season.
On Saturday, February 11, eight R.L. Turner artists competed in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) Competition at Coppell High School. We walked away with three medals! They put a lot of hard work and dedication they put into their artwork.
