Former Harlem Globetrotter Visits Polk

Former Harlem Globetrotter Visits Polk Middle School

Former Harlem Globetrotter Visits Polk Middle SchoolFormer Harlem Globetrotter, Melvin Adams, visits Polk Middle School, encouraging students to make their own future. Adams was once a Harlem Globetrotter, but is now a motivational speaker. He loves to visit schools across the nation to encourage young people. Having an abusive upbringing, Adams shared that he threw over 3,000 basketballs per day to win parental approval. Despite being only 5’8″, Adams defied the odds by excelling in a sport dominated by men averaging a height of 6’4″.

He shares his childhood struggles with youth to inspire them to greatness. He explains that no matter what kind of trouble you’ve gotten into, you can choose to “hit the reset button” in your own life, choosing to excel. Adams credits a middle school principal who told him he was “awesome” every day. Consequently, he is paying it forward, by encouraging those students who need a positive boost and hope in their lives.

CFB Celebrates 2018 Digital Learning Day

CFB Celebrates 2018 Digital Learning Day

CFB Celebrates 2018 Digital Learning DayCFB celebrates 2018 Digital Learning Day across the district.  The official International Celebration of Digital Learning is Feb, 22. Administrators, teachers, and students around the world come up with innovative ways to call attention to their digital learning accomplishments. Therefore, CFB will be showcasing how digital learning impacts not only the student learning environment, but the adult working environment as well. Consequently, campuses will participate by sharing hashtags #CFBcreates, #CFBcriticalthinking, #CFBcommunicates, and #CFBcollaborates on social media with photos of students in action. The #CFBcreates hashtag represents events where students may create a movie, digital poster, infographic, or other creative digital element. For #CFBcriticalthinking, students may research a global problem and analyze a point of view in social media. For #CFBcommunicates, student questions may be shared on Twitter, video conference or other media per class. Finally, students may collaborate in a digital learning environment, sharing their team accomplishments with #CFBcollaborates.

Great Lakes employees donate over 4,000 snacks to Rainwater Elementary, their adopted school. Employees at the Plano-based office delivered 4,224 healthy snacks on Feb. 14 to the CFB elementary campus. “With over half of our students qualifying for the free and reduced-price meals program, food plays a big factor in their ability to concentrate on academics,” said Principal Charlotte Sasser-Thomas. “Snacks provide students the extra brain power needed to fuel through after school tutoring sessions.”

“We partnered with Rainwater Elementary so our employees could make an impact on student success at a neighborhood school,” said Amy Kerwin, Vice President – Community Investments at Great Lakes. “Together we’re helping students get a strong start on the path to postsecondary education.”

The Winter Snack Drive is one of several Great Lakes Gives campaigns that take place throughout the academic year.
