McCoy Elementary Cowboys study electricity and circuits. The fourth graders in Mrs. Aznavour’s science class, learned that by closing a circuit connected to a D-cell battery, they could power a light, make an audio tone, or even power a motor. Students learned about the positive and negative connections on a battery.

McCoy Cowboys Learn Math
On December 7, 2018 Kindergartners at McCoy Elementary School did morning work in Mrs. Sughrue and Mrs. Joel’s class. For their morning work, these students used the online ST math program. ST (spatial-temporal) math offers neuroscience-based mathematics instruction with visual animations and game-based learning for Pre K-12 students. Students initially complete animated math puzzles and games without language and mathematical symbols. The program helps to jumpstart some tougher math concepts at a very young age.
RHS Artist’s Work Will Hang at Representative’s Office
State representative-elect, Julie Johnson, has requested artist’s work from CFB to hang in her office. The three pieces selected to be on display in the office during the month of January are by Ranchview High School artist, Brittany Given. Brittany’s work received the gold seal at the VASE competition in April. Ms. Johnson, whose hometown is Carrollton, begins her term in January, 2019.

English/Language Arts K-8 Instructional Materials Adoption
The public is invited to view the instructional materials that the Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD is considering for possible adoption for the current K-8 English/Language Arts adoption. The English and Spanish materials being considered are currently being evaluated by faculty and staff for implementation during the 2019-2020 school year. Members of the community are welcome to view these materials and make suggestions to the Textbook Adoption Committee.
Materials will be on display for viewing at the Educational Services Division Complex located at 1820 Pearl Street for the week of January 14-18 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. Forms will be available for the public to provide feedback and/or suggestions.

Stark 3rd Grader Wins Fire Prevention Poster Contest
Janie Stark Elementary third grader Chloe Hernandez shows off her Fire Prevention Poster, just announced as Best of Show for the 2019 Fire Prevention Poster Contest. The theme of the 2019 poster contest was “LOOK. LISTEN. LEARN. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” As winner, Chloe received a $100 gift card to Walmart. This year marked the 23rd consecutive year the Farmers Branch Fire Department has offered the Fire Prevention Poster Contest.
2018 CFB Cheer Classic is Dec. 15
The CFBISD Athletics Department will host the 2018 CFB Cheer Classic at Smith High School on Dec. 15, 2018 at 10 AM. Parents and members of the community are invited to come support the Middle School and High School Cheer Programs as they perform their UIL Game Day routine.
McCoy Participates in 2018 Hour of Code
Students at McCoy Elementary participated in the 2018 Hour of Code, by learning how object-oriented programming works and implementing this knowledge into code of their own. The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. Students and Computer Science teachers from Newman Smith High School visited McCoy to give a presentation to students and demonstrate the need for
coders today. In Texas alone, there are over 44,000 jobs available for coders, with only a fraction of that need being met. The project seeks to demystify code so that anybody can learn the basics.
Polk Theatre Wins at UIL
The Polk Middle School Theatre Department took 1st place at the UIL One Act Play. The theatre group performed “Zink: The Myth, The Legend, The Zebra,” by Cherie Bennett.
