Creekview Mock Trial Attends Inaugural Victory in Vegas Invitational

Creekview Mock Trial Attends Inaugural Victory in Vegas Invitational (1)

The Creekview Mock Trial team just returned from the Inaugural Victory in Vegas Invitational Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada.  A select few top teams from around the country were invited to attend and Creekview was the only team from Texas honored with an invitation.

This year’s case dealt with the murder of an undercover police officer who had been investigating a college study drug ring.  Over the course of two days of scrimmages and two days of rounds, students argued for and portrayed witnesses on both sides of the case.

Creekview was represented by attorneys Allen Mason, R’Mani Ervin, Liza Frolova, Kassandra Busby, and Natali Arredondo and witnesses Harris Pierce, Yusraa Tariq, Isabella Barkat, and R’Mani Ervin.  Harris Pierce brought home a Top Witness Award for his portrayal of two separate eye witnesses (one for the Prosecution side and one for the Defense).  The team was coached by Brian Sheguit and Creekview alumnus Sydney Franklin.

While in Vegas, the team was also able to hear a keynote address by former mob attorney and former Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman, attend a Blue Man Group performance, and visit the Hoover Dam.

Carnival

The night started with a carnival with free food, games, prizes and “back to school” goodies for the attendees. Schools and local CFBISD business partners provided the carnival games and free SWAG. The Maintenance Department for the school district cooked over 6,000 hotdogs for carnival-goers.

Athletic teams

New Safety “Buzzer” Systems in Place

New Safety "Buzzer" Systems in PlaceCarrollton-Farmers Branch ISD has a goal to maintain a safe and secure environment for students, staff and visitors. This year, beginning on the first day of school on August 19, the only point of entry to our campuses will be through the main entrances that are monitored by a new video intercom system.

All of our campus doors will be locked at a predetermined time (based on building needs) during regular school hours. Parents, vendors and other visitors interested in entering our school buildings throughout the day will be required to follow an established protocol using the video intercom system monitored by building office staff.

Bright yellow signs are displayed at the entrances to our buildings explaining the initial process. Parents, vendors, and visitors will:

  • Press the entry button located near the entrance
  • State the purpose for visiting

Upon entry to the building visitors will need to follow these step-by-step procedures:

  • Stop in main office, have their ID scanned through the Raptor’s National Sex Offender Registry and receive an ID badge
  • Wear ID badge while visiting campus
  • Stop in the office before leaving the building to turn in ID badge

It is important for parents, vendors and visitors to know they will be required to state the purpose of their visit before entry to our school buildings will be allowed. This requirement will also be in place whether the person(s) requesting entry are known or unknown. The requirement will also be in place whether a visitor is dropping off items or planning an extensive stay. These established procedures are district-wide so parents, students and visitors will have similar experiences from one building to another.

Staff, including our guest teachers, will also be required to wear ID badges each day. As a district, we believe it is important to model our new safety etiquette for students and their families. Guest teachers will pick up ID badges each day in the office before their teaching assignment begins.

Occasionally buildings will have events that are open to families during normal school hours. In order to keep these events safe and to maintain our security protocol a staff member be stationed at the main entrance to monitor visitors.

Q&A – Video Intercom System Procedures

  1. When will the new procedure go into effect?
The new video intercom system will go into effect on August 19, 2019, the first day of school.
  2. What time will the doors of the school buildings be opened?
Each building will determine when the doors will be opened for student entry in the morning and when they will be permanently locked for the day. This will be based on the needs of each school.
  3. What if my child is late for school in the morning, will he/she need to be buzzed in?
After doors are permanently locked for the day, all students, parents and visitors will need to enter our school buildings through the main entrance and will follow the district entry procedures.
  4. What are the procedures that have been developed?
Signage will be displayed at the entrances to our buildings explaining the new process. Parents, vendors, and visitors will:
    • Press the entry button located near the entrance
    • State the purpose for visiting
    • Upon entry to the building, visitors will need to follow these step-by-step procedures:
    • Stop in main office, have their ID scanned through the Raptor’s National Sex Offender Registry and receive an ID badge
    • Wear ID badge while visiting campus
    • Stop in the office before leaving the building to turn in ID badge
  1. Will parents, visitors and volunteers need to follow the established procedures?
Yes, all parents, visitors, volunteers, and vendors will need to follow established procedures.
  2. Will the system be in use when there are large numbers of visitors and/or parents at the school during normal school hours?
This may happen occasionally. In order to keep these events safe and to maintain our security protocol, a staff member will be stationed at the main entrance to monitor visitors. Safety procedures during these events will be left to the campus depending on their security needs.
  3. How will visitors who are unfamiliar with the new system know where to enter the building?
Signage will be posted outside all exterior doors directing visitors to the main entrances of buildings, where information will be posted regarding procedures required for entering.
  4. How will school staff determine whether or not to grant access into the building?
Office staff will make a determination after the person requesting entry has expressed a valid purpose for their visit. If there is any concern about granting access, a school administrator will be contacted.

Thank you for your patience as we implement and make the procedures outlined above a part of our daily routines at CFBISD.

Meet the Principal of Janie Stark Elementary

Meet the Principal of Janie Stark ElementaryAustin, Texas native, Jennifer Putman, is the new principal of Janie Stark Elementary. Putman has been a teacher, an instructional specialist, and an administrator in her 17 years in public education. As she began to take the next journey in her career, all the great things she was hearing about CFBISD drew her to the district.

Learning Should be Fun

Putman emphasized, “I want the kids to want to come to school every day.” Her goal is for school to be engaging in fun for the staff as well as the students. When talking about Janie Stark Elementary and why parents would want their children to attend the campus, Putman said, “I’ve always truly felt that if parents know their kids come to school every day and feel loved and valued, that they know they are in the right hands and they are in the right place.”

Three CFB Students Participate in 2019 Lone Star Leadership Academy Camps

Three CFB Students Participate in 2019 Lone Star Leadership Academy CampsOver one thousand Texas students in grades 4-8 were sent to Education in Action’s Summer 2019 Lone Star Leadership Academy camps. Among the attendees were 3 CFB students who had overall grade averages above 85 and were nominated by their teachers for these camps.

The nominations were based on demonstrated leadership ability, academic success, and involvement in school/community activities. Sixth graders Carter Norton and Noah Stewart, from Perry Middle School, went to the camp in the Houston/Galveston area. Additionally, 7th grade Polk Middle School student, Ariel Almanza, went to the Austin/San Antonio camp.

Learning Leadership

During the weeklong, overnight camps, these distinguished students developed leadership skills while learning about the great state of Texas. Participants experienced what they are learning in school through visits to notable and historically significant Texas sites.

Austin and San Antonio Venues included the offices of participants’ state legislators at the Texas State Capitol, the Supreme Court of Texas, bat watching on the Lone Star Riverboat, and The Alamo. Students in the Houston program visited NASA, Galveston Bay with a marine biologist, the San Jacinto Battleground Monument, and Moody Gardens. In addition, professionals at sites visited students to a wide variety of unique careers during each camp.

Education in Action is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young people to be informed and active leaders in their communities.
