Newman Smith Regional Wrestling Results

The Trojan wrestlers had a pretty good start to the regional tournament. During day one on Friday, all three boys that entered the tournament won at least one match. Both Tyrese Lewis and Chris Conway won two matches and returned for day 2. On the second day of competition, Lewis' tournament ended with a 6th place finish. He ended his season as a regional placer with a 25-9 overall record. Conway's path was an odyssey worthy of a Trojan hero. He won his first match of the date then was narrowly defeated in his second. That loss sent him to the 5th place match, which he won. That victory allowed him to challenge for the fourth place wrestler for a berth to the state wrestling finals. In his final battle of the weekend, Chris Conway avenged two previous losses against a competitor from Creekview and will be the Trojans' lone qualifier for state in his first competitive season.

Newman Smith Trojans Advance 5 Wrestlers to Regionals

February 9 @ Highland Park – District Wrestling Tournament

The Trojan wrestling program took tremendous strides at Highland Park on Thursday. This year’s team quintupled the number of regional qualifiers it had from the previous season. Last year, Tyrese Lewis was the lone Trojan representative at the Regional and this year he returns with four of his teammates. Although all the wrestlers competed well throughout the day, Tyrese’s championship match was one for the ages. He won in an overtime thriller and avenged his only district loss of the season by beating his competitor from RL Turner.

The five Trojans that will advance to the regional are: Mackenzie Greer (4th Place 119 – Girls), Neriaha Wofford (3rd Place 128 – Girls), Tyrese Lewis (1st Place 145 – Boys), Christopher Conway (4th Place 170 – Boys), and Kendall Iwuagwu (2nd Place 182 – Boys). The team will also send Rafael Leon as an alternate because he took 5th place in the 152 pound class. Please congratulate these youngsters and cheer them on as they advance to next week’s tournament in Bryan, TX.

The girls 200 Medley Relay was a Freshman/Senior divide with two freshman Eleanna Martinez and Keaira Rosales, both posting personal bests in their races.   Eleanna leading off the relay with a strong 50 backstroke and Keaira Rosales finishing the relay and breaking under the 30 second mark in her 50 free.   Clarke went a personal best with a personal best of 30 seconds in her 50 breast and Julia Walsdorf holding on in the 50 butterly.   Walsdorf also had two strong console swims, besting both of her times from Friday in the 200 Free and 100 backstroke.

On the boys side, Max Garcia led the charge with a NEW SCHOOL RECORD in the 100 backstroke.   He also led off the 200 Medley relay and was helped by Connor Hudson, Oscar Cardenas and David Alvarez just barely missing the school record.   Alvarez anchoring the relay and breaking the 25 second barrier with a 24.9 in his 50 Free.    Another strong finish and time was shown by Oscar Cardenas, Reid Jamesmeyer, Connor Hudson, And Max Garcia in the 400 Free relay.   All four boys giving their best swims and times to come out strong in the very last event of the day.It was a great weekend and career end to our seniors who have represented Newman Smith with pride and determination.
