The Science & Engineering Pathway was created after Newman Smith Alumni expressed their desire to enter the field of engineering, but did not have the resources during high school.
In 2001, the Principal, along with counselors, teachers, post secondary education professors and deans, and business leaders came together in a series of meetings to establish a four year plan, designed to help students get the scope, rigor, and real-world experience needed to be prepared for an engineering degree. All parties involved agreed that, in order to be well received by students and parents, that the curriculum had to be flexible enough not to exclude students from the high school experience of participating in extra and co-curricular activities.
The first cohort of the Science & Engineering Pathway began in 2004.
