Welcome to Bea Salazar Learning Center

C-FBISD established the Bea Salazar  Learning Center to serve as the District’s disciplinary alternative education program as required by the Texas Education code. Appropriate conduct is essential to helping each child benefit from his or her enrollment at Salazar.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Bea Salazar Learning Center is to empower all students to achieve academic and behavioral success.

Philosophy

The Bea Salazar Learning Center is designed to offer C-FB students an alternative setting in which to make positive changes in their behavior and ultimately return to their home campus. The program is based on the belief that students can learn to achieve goals in a manner that maintains dignity and respect for themselves and others.

Time

Monday – Friday
7:00 A.M. – 2:15 P.M.

Placement

Mandatory and discretionary placements are for  45 days and terminate the Friday following completion of the assigned days.

Second and subsequent placements during a school year are for 60 days.

Review for Exit

Students are reviewed for possible exit from DAEP at 1000 points (for a 45 day placement).

Factors considered in review include:

  • Referrals (school and bus)
  • Grades
  • Attendance
  • Behavior

Classes

  • Daily schedule is: 7:00 A.M. – 2:15 P.M.
  • 7 period school day
  • All students schedules mirror their class schedule at their home school in addition to receiving instruction in Self Discipline & Social Skills.

Attendance Law

  • Your student will need to attend school every day:
    • For attendance credit
    • To earn points toward their successful release from Bea Salazar.
  • School starts at 7:00, so students will need to be in the front door between 6:40 – 6:50 to be able to get through the check-in procedure on time. Buses drop off around 6:40.
  • Students are tardy at 7:00 if not through the blue double doors resulting in not earning their point for being on time.
  • Parents must physically walk their child into the building if they arrive at or after 7:10.
  • Verified absences must have written documentation. Phone calls are no longer acceptable.

Advisory Teacher

  • Each student is assigned an advisory teacher while at Salazar.
  • Advisory teacher serves as your child’s advocate.
  • Expect weekly contact from the advisory teacher.
  • Please feel free to contact your student’s Advisory Teacher with any questions or concerns.
  • As needed, sessions will be held with the Guidance Counselor, Behavior Resource Specialist, or an Administrator.

Academic & Behavior Expectations

  • Must follow rules of Bea Salazar Learning Center and CFB ISD’s Student Code of Conduct.
  • Complete all assigned academic work.
  • Must be in dress code (including ID) and on time.
  • Respectful at all times to staff and peers.
  • Maintain self-control.
  • Eyes open, head up.
  • Raise hand for permission to speak, stand or get out of your desk.
  • Follow all directions.

Points Plan

  • Used to help students monitor and work on goal behaviors.
  • Students receive points for academics (top of each box) & points for behavior (bottom of each box).
  • 40 Points can be earned each day toward a cumulative total.
  • Students may earn extra points towards early exit for exemplary academics and behavior.

Parents & Points Plan

  • Used as a communication system regarding your student’s academic performance and behavior.
  • Points Plans will be sent home weekly on Monday’s.
  • Parents, we encourage you to take some time to go over your son or daughter’s Points Plan with them.
  • You can use this as a tool to track and discuss your son or daughter’s progress and behavior.
  • Again, any questions please feel free to contact your student’s Advisory Teacher.

Academic Structure

Senate Bill 1, Chapter 37, as passed by the 74th Texas Legislature, establishes the following academic provisions for students placed into DAEP: “Each school district shall provide an alternative education program that focuses on English language arts, mathematics, science, history, and self-discipline . . .”

All  students are taught by certified classroom teachers using district curriculum. In addition, activities led by the staff are designed to teach students new ways of thinking and behaving to enhance their self-discipline.

Enrollment Procedure

As soon as all required paperwork from the student’s home campus is received, the parent/guardian will receive a phone call to schedule a date for an 7:30 AM intake meeting. Both the student and the parent/guardian must attend this meeting to receive information about the program as well as complete the necessary enrollment forms.

Transportation

  • No student vehicles are allowed on campus.
  • Parents will select a mode of transportation for their student while at Salazar.
  • Parents must call the school if student is changing their mode of transportation (even for a day).

Bus Transportation Policy

  • Students must have an ID to ride the bus.
  • Students must follow the Riders Code of Conduct.

 Upon the second violation, bus privileges are terminated for the remainder of the placement at DAEP.

Criminal Trespass Law

  • According to Texas state law, all school campuses, except Bea Salazar campus, are off-limits to students during their placement period. This includes extra-curricular activities.
  • Students violating this law are subject to criminal trespass charges and further discipline action.

Title I

Salazar offers a school wide Title I program using all Title I federal funds to address the education needs of all students.

General Rules

  • No cash
  • No cell phones
  • No backpacks, purses, or wallets
  • No combs, picks, or hair brushes
  • No jewelry including spacers or colored nail polish
  • No pens, pencils, books, notebooks
  • No makeup, lotion, lip gloss, lip balm
  • No logos may be visible on any item of clothing.
  • No tattoos are to be visible while at DAEP—tattoos must be fully covered at all times while on DAEP campus
  • All items worn in hair (elastics, bobby pins, etc.) should be solid white, black or brown.
  • NO student vehicles will be allowed on DAEP campus

Meals

Prepackaged breakfast and lunch meals are available at normal District prices.
