The Trojans closed out 2016 on a high note. All ten wrestlers that competed in the tournament won at least one match while 8 of 10 came home with medals. In the JV boys’ brackets, Jamel Scott took home a bronze and Darian Dozier received a gold for his first place performance. In the girls’ tournament, junior Barbie Sanchez went 2-1 on the day and took home a bronze medal. As for the varsity boys, the Trojan numbers may have been small, but they were mighty. All five of Smith’s varsity boys took home medals, and combined they scored 64.5 team points to finish 5th out of 12 teams. With only five out of fourteen weight classes represented, that is quite an accomplishment! The Trojan boys wrestled tough from start to finish. Freshman Anthony Machorro took home the bronze at 106. All three seniors, Tyrese Lewis (152), Chris Conway (182), and Jonathan Johnson (285), placed second in their brackets. The lone Smith champion was sophomore Kendall Iwuagwu who pinned his opponent in the 195 pound class. This final tournament of 2016 has started the wheels in motion for a great district season starting on January 5 at home versus Lovejoy and McKinney North. The wrestling program would like to wish everyone a happy holiday break, and we’ll see you next year!
