Curriculum at the CFBISD STEAM Gifted Academy

The CFBISD STEAM Gifted Academy at Landry Elementary will offer a special opportunity for identified gifted students to learn with their academic peers in homogeneously grouped classes with enriched curriculum in four content areas:

1. Science & Engineering at the Gifted Academy

LEGO WeDo 2.0 is designed to be a flexible, cross-curriculum tool that ignites curiosity. A variety of learning experiences, including guided learning and problem-solving lessons that relate directly back to students’ real-life questions and observations.

The program is a hands-on STEM solution that combines the LEGO brick, classroom-friendly software, engaging standards-based projects and a discovery based approach. Designed with collaboration in mind, each Core Set supports two students, introducing them to computational thinking and engineering principles in a fun and engaging way.

Learn to investigate problems and find possible solutions while building collaboration and communication skills as students share their learning processes with their peers – learning with and through others.

The students will learn to see failure as a form of information gathering to develop an understanding of how parts work together to create a whole.

2. Mathematics at the Gifted Academy

A rigorous K–6 classroom curriculum resource that makes use of a math workshop environment with rich, authentic contexts. It fosters the use of mathematical models as thinking tools, tenacious problem solving, and the reading and writing of mathematical arguments and justifications.

Depth vs. Breadth: “play in the playground” of the problem, rather than merely complete quantities of similar problems for practice.

3. Social Studies

These new geography labs use the power of interactive maps to create, explore, travel around, compete, and have lots of fun while learning. The labs are the best way to engage students in the classroom by creating exciting and active learning.

4. English Language Arts

Texas Performance Standards Projects

Students engage in advanced learning as they research in their specific interest areas. Using their abilities and backgrounds, the student inquiry goes across multiple content areas and connects students to the world.
