Ms. Johnson is a teacher at R. L. Turner High School. The award ceremony took place during the Talk of Texas Lunch held each year at LAUNCH — Texas PTA’s premier summer event attended by 3000 PTA leaders and members across the state.

In February, Texas PTA called for nominations for the award. The Texas PTA was looking for educators that “exemplify making every child’s potential a reality in the classroom, on the campus, and throughout the school district.” Hundreds of nominations were received. After careful committee review, Ms. Johnson was selected as the 2018 Texas PTA Secondary Teacher of the Year. At the Talk of Texas Lunch, she was joined by fellow awardees and honored guests.

Ms. Johnson was nominated by Doris Bumpass of R. L. Turner PTSA whose nomination read in part, “[Ms. Johnson] has an ease, gentleness, and strength that is incredibly refreshing to see in the world. She blesses the English students at R. L. Turner High School each day. She has answered her calling to help the world and does so by supporting and cultivating true writers. What a legacy she is creating. Her influence will live on for years through her students’ talents.”
