Polk Students Participate in Texas History Lesson with a Longhorn

Polk Middle School students got to have an up-and-close personal experience with a live Longhorn.  The 7th grade Social Studies & Texas History classes were able to partake and learn from Mike Wentz, a retired CFBISD teacher.  Mike thought students were lacking in life experiences.

Upon retiring nearly six years ago, Mike purchased three longhorns. Mike has worked hard on training the longhorns to be Photo and Riding steers.   The program was introduced at DeWitt Perry Middle School.  Since then, Mike has presented programs to other middle and elementary schools in other districts.  The six vocabulary terms discussed are TEK specific for this unit of study.  All Texas History students attend the presentation during their regular class periods throughout the day-7 periods.  Additional items are discussed: The concept of branding (seeing a real iron, and background), cattle drives, barbed wire.  At the conclusion, some students can pose for a picture with the steer.

Since beginning teaching, Mike has always tried to bring life experiences to students.

Thank you for bringing an amazing life experience to CFBISD, Mike!
