Broncos in Action at Barbara Bush Middle School
The Barbara Bush Bronco Family showed their caring side as they jumped into action to support the relief efforts for those Texans affected by Hurricane Harvey. On the second day of school, announcements were made and collections began for the evacuees who could bring very little with them as the flooding continued in Southeast Texas. The Bronco families collected diapers, baby clothes, flip flops and canned food. They also donated coins and dollars to help families buy cleaning products and personal toiletries. In just 10 days of collecting, the Bronco Nation collected over $400 and made two deliveries to Metrocrest Services for distribution to evacuees staying in the local area. Our thanks to all BBMS families for helping us take care of our fellow Texans.
Celebrating and Learning about our Diversity
Hispanic Heritage Month is traditionally celebrated between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15 each year. IB students experienced a great kick off event with the first every Hispanic Day Read Aloud. We decorated a corner of the library, brought delicious pan dulce (sweet bread) to try, and listened to each other read a folktale about Mexico’s Independence Day. Thanks to Ms. Flores and Ms. Grider for helping with that kick off!
The celebration has continued with students reading announcements to teach us about South American countries with a Hispanic Culture. ESL students have drawn posters of famous Hispanics who have impacted our culture. And recently, our students listened to mariachi band play music! Mariachi Nueva Era traveled to our school from the University of North Texas, so our Broncos could learn more about their history, see the costumes and hear the instruments that create the unique mariachi sound. Thanks to Mrs. Garcia for arranging that visit!
Encouraging creative thinking!
Did you know that this IB World School has a Makerspace? A place where students can bring their ideas to create unique things? Sometimes students use the Little Bits electronic kits to make cars and moving arms. Sometimes students use CDs and straws to try making hovercrafts. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, 25 students can come to the Makerspace if they have a plan for creating something useful or unique. We are collecting donations of old toys that have motors in them for future projects. But we are also looking for wooden popsicle sticks, rolls of masking tape, and small bottles of acrylic paint for future Makerspace projects. We look forward to more creative endeavors to come out of this!
